1950-T Break in

How would you guys break in the engine on my 1950-T. Just finished a complete overhaul. New sleeves, pistons, rings, bearings, and head work. Used old camshaft, rocker arms, and oil pump because the engine was so stout before it was allowed to freeze and bust.

I"m thinking I"ll hook the 12" bog up to her and sink it to the axles for about half a day.

Use the dyno, if you had the valves set to the correct protrsion, use the original settings, Did you reset the pump to the latet timing and RPM specs?

Everything is set right and ready to go. I really don't have access to a dyno and need the tractor to plant cotton with in two weeks, so I was trying to figure out a good way to get the rings seated.

Break it in like we did 40 years ago. Hook it to a good sized disk or field cultivator and take it to the field. Pull it, but don't over load it. Run the engine at 3/4 throttle or more and watch the oil and temp. guages. After about two hours it should have the rings seated and you will have a good tractor. They were designed to work.

If you just putz around with it you never will have a good tractor.

I think the offset bog will be a good mate for it then. It pulls the 2-105 pretty hard, and the 1066 we used to have had all kinds of trouble pulling it,m so I should be able to load it pretty good without overloading it.

We've had the 1950-T since 1973 and the 2-105 since 1976. You don't have to tell me which is more tractor. The T would pull 5 bottoms 7.5 mph. Show me a 2-105 that will do that.

Have you retorqued the head? When you change oil the first time make sure you change both filters as well. When you get a100 hours on it retorque the head & reset the valves.

I havn't retorqued the head yet. It has less than 10 hours on it right now. I'll follow your advice on retorque and valve adjustment when I get to 100 hours.

Also, the over/under is slow to shift from under to direct and has a slow drip, like every 30 seconds form the rear seal. Do you guys think some Lucas auto tranny additive might help? I know the leak is something I'll have to deal with till fall, but I'd like to get my cotton and beans planted with this tractor instead of the 170. It would be a little bit overkill for a 4 row 5100.
