1952 8N Bendix

My Dad's working on a 1952 8N. He was trying to get it started, it backfired, then starter wouldn't work- pulled starter- Bendix has parts missing/broken off. So I've ordered him a new Bendix.

He hasn't yet tried to see if he can make it turn over by other means; provided it will turnover once he gets the new Bendix, is it worth splitting the tractor to try getting out the parts that likely came off Bendix?

Or if it turns over and runs, just let the pieces ride along?

Rarely (no, not never) do broken starter drive parts within the bell housing cause problems.

Most folks simply leave such parts inside.

I have broken the Bendix on my '52 8N (since departed) twice. Second time a piece jammed between the flywheel and bell housing. I tried various methods trying to jar it loose. A great time to replace clutch and bearings while it was split to remove the broken piece.

There is normally room down there for ONE broken piece. But like Rick B 8N WA said, there doesn't seem to be room for two.
