1957 ford 860 ?

Hi. New to this forum and gramps 1957 ford 860 tractor. Just got it running and when I shut it off, oil or fluid came out of hole (see pics). It stopped after a min or so. What is this? Thank you.

Don't get impatient, answers will come when someone gets to your post, its not like there is a staff here just waiting for your questions.

If the oil is coming out around the cotter pin it means you have either a rear main engine seal leaking or a transmission input seal leak. I didn't check to see if your engine is one but some engines also have an expansion plug behind the flywheel that can leak. Any of these require splitting the tractor to fix.

Thanks for the response. The fluid is coming out the hole (see prev pics) where cotter pin is sticking out. This is what is puzzling.

That hole is a drain hole to let any fluid out rather than fill up and destroy the clutch.That cotter pin is to move around as you drive so the hole does not plug up.As others have said it is either transmission and or engine oil.

Hello Parker welcome to YT! You can pull the bolts out and pull off that plate for a closer look. Just don’t stick your hand in there with the engine running. Not sure what you know about mechanical stuff but the tractor’s clutch is up in there and that hole and pin are there as a provision to let oil drain out that leaks in there when something that is supposed to contain it looses that ability. If the clutch gets oil on it looses it ability to function correctly. It works on roughly the same principle as brakes. Parts with lined surfaces (friction material) rub against flat metal under pressure to drive the tractor. If you know anything about brakes and oil I suppose you can figure out that the two do not mix very well. Congratulations on getting Grandpa’s tractor, enjoy it!

You are not going to see anything but 2 tubes for hyd system. Input trans shaft seals or rear main. Best bet is trans input cause trans is over full.

Check all your fluid levels,over full is common. These old Fords will get a bunch of water in the them from condensation. Drain ,refill to correct level......and if it only leaks a little bit don't worry. Ain't hurting a thing,just keep an eye on the fluid level. It sounds like you ain't no where near needing to split it and fix it
