We are having a problem with this old jewel. It will not go in forward or reverse. The clutch is engaging and it has a brand new pump on it. Any ideas on what it could be? Any help will be appreciated.

Check the linkage on RH side to be sure it's operating correctly. Linkage has a history of groove pin failing. How long since hyd filter was changed & hyd sump checked/cleaned?

My father owned a 1969 john deere 400 backhoe and I spent many many hours digging cellar holes and trenches with that machine. Definetly check the sump screen, pull the hose off, remove the nipple, and actually pull it out and check it! Good luck

The parts manual is free on the Jd web site.
The nice folks at 1-800-522-7448 have real JD operator's and service manuals on CD and hard copy.

She is a 1965 to 1971.
Front pumps are often replaced with nothing wrong with them. The front pump requires oil to be pushed up to it from the transmission pump/filter/screen/valves. The front pump could have it's drive shaft disconnected and it should make no difference to the forward/reverser.

B and D, your reply is not quite correct... the reversers on those utilized hydraulic pressure to operate. I have had a hydraulic pump coupling fail on those more than once. And when it does, you will no
longer move.

I also think trans pump not main hyd pump supplies oil to hyd reverser.

Could be, but I seem to remember not being able to move. Maybe because the loader was on the ground. I try to forget some of the rotten stuff...
