1965 ford 3000

Need some help with wiring. Put in a new key switch and starter solenoid. Its no longer starting. Pin 1 comes from battery 2 and 4 isn't used 3 goes to battery side of solenoid along with coil wire. Pin 5 goes to neutral safety switch then it goes to the starter side of the solenoid. What did I do wrong

From the instructions picture you posted and your description you have a gas engine, not diesel. You mixed up terminals 3 and 4. #3 is for a thermostart or an ether injector on a diesel, not used on a gas engine. #1 should get power from the battery cable post of the solenoid, not #3. The wire going to the coil belongs on terminal #4.

From the instructions picture you posted and your description you have a gas engine, not diesel. You mixed up terminals 3 and 4. #3 is for a thermostart or an ether injector on a diesel, not used on a gas engine. #1 should get power from the battery cable post of the solenoid, not #3. The wire going to the coil belongs on terminal #4.
I forgot to mention that it is indeed a gasser. So I need to move the wire from #3 pin to #4 or run a new wire just for the coil and get it off of the starter solenoid.

You do not use #3 on a gas tractor.

The wire to the coil belongs on terminal #4. Any wires for electrically powered gauges and the charging indicator light, if equipped, belong on #4 as well.

#5 wire goes to one terminal of the neutral start switch, then another wire goes from the second terminal of the neutral start switch to the solenoid.
 
Did you follow the solenoid wiring in the picture below?

You might have a wire going to the + side of the coil on the I terminal of the solenoid, if the tractor had a resistor bypass in the ignition circuit, no wire there if it did not.

Is the solenoid mounted to a good ground? The base is the ground point for the coil inside the solenoid and must be grounded.

Battery and starter are switched sides the S terminal has the neutral safety switch the I terminal has coil wire and a wire running to the key switch.
 
I do not have a 3000 wiring diagram at hand but I believe the wire from the switch #4 goes to the coil + terminal. The I terminal would often only have the one wire going to the coil + terminal. If the wire is from the key switch #4 terminal goes to the I terminal of the solenoid than the other wire goes from the I to the Coil + terminal, it should still work.

I also suggest moving the battery and starter connections to the posts shown in the picture.

Should I only have 1 wire coming from the key switch to the solenoid? If so would that be going through the neutral safety switch? This tractor has been a wiring nightmare since we got it. So neutral safety switch to s side of solenoid an to the #5 pin of key switch. Then coil to the I terminal and to the #4 pin of key switch right?

Normally there will be one wire from the Battery cable post of the solenoid to the ignition switch to supply battery power to the ignition key switch (#1 terminal). That wire may be connected to the ammeter, if equipped with one, before it goes to the key switch. Then there will be the wire from the neutral safety switch to the S terminal of the solenoid, to engage the starter and crank the engine to start.

I would run the wire from the #4 key switch terminal direct to the coil + terminal, not the solenoid I terminal.

You should get the correct Ford service manual for your 3000. It will have the factory wiring diagrams in it.

Key switch has 5 terminal positions
Key off- no active terminals
Key position 1- #2 terminal has power
Key position 2- #2 and 4 terminal has power
Start positions- terminals 2 and 4 no power terminal 3 has power
Start position 2- terminal 5 gets power

Should I wire coil direct to terminal 4 and neutral safety switch to terminal 5?
 
To be clear one of the terminals must have power all the time when the battery is connected (if you have a master switch it could remove the power when turned off). That would be terminal 1 from the switch info/picture you posted. It will be powered by a wire from the ammeter or the battery cable post of the solenoid.

Terminal 2 is for accessories, if you have any.

Terminal 3 is for use with diesel cold starting aids and is not used on your gas tractor. You do not use that #1 start position on your gas tractor.

Terminal 4 will have the ignition (coil), any electrical gauges, and the charging system hooked to it.

Terminal 5 will have the wire going to the neutral start switch hooked to it.


When you turn the key to the #2 start position (fully clockwise) and release the key, it should spring back beyond the #1 start position and make terminals #2 and #4 live for the engine to stay running. That would be the run position.

If terminals #2 and #4 do not have power when the key is turned fully clockwise to start; run a wire from the I terminal of the solenoid to the +terminal of the coil to provide power to the coil when the starter is cranking the engine.

I left out terminal 1 because it's the power into the key switch. I have to get a longer starter cable going to the solenoid tomorrow to wire it up correctly. Then hopefully everything is correct and I can put it to work again.
