1991 dodge van water pump

Just got my 2001 Chrysler out of the shop after losing a water pump. No warning, just dumped the anti-freeze in the highway. Said they had to drop the engine down to get to it.

I wondered how they did it. I just replaced the one in my wife's 03 Chrysler. I was able to use a pry bar and compress the motor mount bushing just enough to slide the water pump between the engine and frame.

Take both and if you have a car ramps take them it will come out the bottom of the motor compartment. Go easy on the small bolts they break easy.

Bring both. If RWD 5.2L etc, with A/C, air pump etc it will be close to an all day job because of all the "junk" that's in the way. Most fasteners are SAE, but metric around the Alt. and Power steering pump mounting. If 3.0L it will be an involved job as previously noted. The whole front has to be removed, including the motor mount. Change the timing belt also while you have it apart.

In the fall of '07 had the pump fail (water) 300 KM from home, on an '89 Dodge van RWD. Chose not to try a roadside fix because of all the accessories involved, and had also done that repair previously. Turned out the impeller moved down the shaft by 1/4" releasing the seal spring presure causing a huge leak. Thought at first, a front frost plug had blown. The tow cost $300 even with CAA road side assistance.

Well I did this water pump today, just about 4 hours. I did use 9/16 10mm and 15 mm. There was lots of things in the way. When all done the van DID NOT START(no crank) , all I did electric was remove negative cable off battery. Jumped starter and solonoid with another battery and took it to another friend to figure out electric trouble. It was a long enough day for me.

Assume this move started it. If so, and wiggling the gear selector lever in "park" or moving it to "neutral" solves the problem............look for a defective "neutral safety switch" on the transmission.
