1993 Toro Wheel Horse Deck Question...

Hi folks!
My first question to you guys...I've got a 1993 Wheel Horse Classic 314-8 with a 42" side discharge deck. Bought it new back then, about 400 hours on it, tractor in great shape, only use it for mowing, kept in garage all winter.
The deck housing has some problems, this coming after I paid $600 to have all three spuindles replaced a few years ago. The deck started cutting horribly, and is rusting out, has a few other issues. No local tractor repair centers can correct it, have told me it's time to just get rid of it (the deck, at least). Because of it's age, I figured I just sell it, and pick up a "cheap" (< $2000) yard tractor, i.e. John Deere, Craftsman, etc. But they all seem so cheap, not at all built like the Toro.
A local dealer just told me that they have a couple NOS Wheel Horse 42" decks from back in the 90's, brand new, that never sold, so they hung onto them. They would sell one for $900.
My question: is it worth it just to buy the deck, and take the chance that the tractor will last another 15 years? Or sell the tractor, and buy a more cheaply made yard tractor for not a lot more than the new deck will cost.
I'm torn, and need some advice.

Hi Gary, sorry I can't answer your question for you; I am in similar predicament: have 2 416-8's (1984/1987), bought 87 new, 84 for parts (deck mainly) in 2000. Have essentially made 1 out of 2 to see how long they would go, now at the point that even new deck ($1100) will not help as tractor frames are cracked thru and rewelded, etc. Engine parts mostly NLA.
Like all good things, they are at the end of their life cycle. Have used (and mis-used) the devil out of them for a total of about $3200? invested. Probably figures out to about $6-8 bucks per mowing (~3 acres) not to mention tilling, dirt/gravel pushing, generator duty, etc.
Wheel Horse made a heck of a machine, don't figure I'll ever find a replacement as good.
Good luck with your decision, and welecome to the site, lot of good info here.

If by chance you live close to Madison Wisconsin , there was a pretty good looking 42" deck off a wheel horse on craig's list a day or so ago and I think it was fairly cheap.
In 1984 I bought a 1969 Wheel Horse GT14 with a new short block, a nice 48" deck and a junk transmission for $275. I'm still using that deck, it's on a 518 now, runs four hours a week but I try to hose it out after each use and grease it every other week.

If it were me I'd buy the deck and keep the Wheel Horse.A new cheap mower won't last much over 5-6 years at best. There are several Wheel Horse people that will help you if needed.Go to RED SQUARE .COM (wheel horse site) and post a wanted add.I just sold a very good 48" deck last weekend. But if you decide to get rid of it I'm interested in it.
