My brother just told me about a 2-70 with cab, heat and working air for $2,000, the bad news is that it has a broken crank shaft. Wondering if an engine from a 1650 or 1655 would fit or what a crankshaft would cost? Any information appreciated.

Just about any Oliver engine would fit.

A 2-70 is the same thing as the 1655, so a 1650/55 engine would be a direct drop in same size replacement. A 310 from a bigger Ollie should fit as well, like from a 1750 or 55. The 1855 and 1950-T & 1955 also had deisel 310's, but they had the turbo so might be a little harder to stuff it all under the hood. Could put one in w/out the turbo, but you'd have to detune the pump then as well, or find one for a 1755 w/out a turbo.

The crankshaft broke in my 1655 diesel; about $6000 later, the tractor was back running. I did all the work myself, except for the engine machine work and assembly.

If you go with the crank, make sure you have the line bore of the main bearings checked. If you purchase a replacement crank I think it would be wise to have a good shop wet particle mag (black light) inspect the crank. Magnaflux is not the answer for looking for cracks in crankshafts. Questions?
