!2 volt conversion on 8n

Recently purchased a 1948 8n with 12 volt conversion. Dealer put in new battery with the positive pole connected to ground. Battery went dead two weeks later. Did this mistake cook the altenator?

ost likely, assuming alternator is wired up. Surprised it took a week..usually faster along with burning wires, etc. Delco 10SI & 10SD & any alternator that I ever saw a schematic of, can't tolerate reverse polarity.

Larry........surprizingly enuff, yer N-tractor can run days on a 12V battery without needing charging.

Yes, most likely yer alternator is BAD. You doubt? Taker into autoparts store for "free" check-out. Simple, eh? Then go back and COMPLAIN to the stupid 12V converter dealer.

I know 8-ways to convert to 12V and they all work, I also know a gazillion ways that don't work. Yers is number gazillion+1 .......Dell, a 12V advocate for the right reason

The next question is do I hook up the battery with negative ground as it should be?

yep.. match battery polarity to alternator polarity.

Alternators require negative to ground. The way they had it probably smoked it immediately, and your 12V battery ran the tractor until it ran down.

You need to find out what you have first...

There are indeed 'positive ground' alternators...

Thanks All- Will go out and do a complete analysis on what I have. It appears it is a one wire 12 volt setup. I purchased a new altenator and will set it up with the three wire configuration and do it right. Will get back with you with results.
