2006 Ford Expedition help

Wife's 2006 Expedition with 107k miles; transmission is acting up, as in, when trying to kick out of overdrive it bucks and kicks like the transmission can't decide what gear to select. Push the overdrive button on the shift stalk and it kicks out of OD just fine. All other shifting up/down works fine. Checked fluid level; its fine. Transmission was replaced about 50k ago.

Anyway, question is whether anyone has experienced this and can share what the solution was. Second, is there a decent website where a person can read about Ford vehicle problems and get ideas. Third, any mechanics out there with knowledge of this problem that can recommend a simple solution.

I don't have aspirations of fixing this myself unless it is simple, but I'd like to present the problem to a qualified mechanic in an intelligent manner.

Thanks for help, Michael

The engine will buck and shudder at 70 MPH when crowding the throttle at about the point the transmission downshifts from overdrive to third gear. This may even be described as a transmission shudder. ? answer that

Good luck finding a good mechanic. Most of them cannot troubleshoot anything unless the computer tells them the problem. I had a GM car that the lights were flashing badly at night. Took it to the dealer 3 times and was told there was nothing wrong. The forth time I demanded to see the Service Manager, as I had made up a digital volt meter that was bouncing all over the place. He agreed there was a problem. I told them I suspected a ground problem or alternator problem. 3 days later they told me they replaced the alternator. Problem solved. 🧑‍🌾

It's hard enough to diagnose in person, on a keyboard is even harder. Are you positive it's the transmission and not an engine miss causing the problem when a load is put on the engine. Does the OD light on the shifter blink? Does the check engine light come on? Do you have a way of scanning or monitoring the PCM for codes and to see what gear is commanded?

The way you present this to a qualified mechanic is to describe it exactly as you did here. Anything further in the way of "home brew diagnostics" will be met with eyerolls. Play the part of the clueless customer.

Mechanics absolutely HATE when you try to do their job for them, as MOST of the time the customer has absolutely no clue what they are talking about. Their so-called tests are meaningless, and reveal nothing. So much so that they give no customers any credit... "If you knew what you were talking about, you wouldn't be here asking me to fix it!"

Only time you can get away with it is if you and the mechanic know each other well.

By the way this was under warranty 🧑‍🌾

There was a you tube video of a guy draining and changing the fluid and adding Lucas transmission fix. It worked for him. 🧑‍🌾
A similar thing started to happen in my old Landrover Discovery, they have a ZF six speed with two lock up torque converters. It took two changes of fluid ; why two I really couldn't say , but it worked . This along with some type of wombat juice additive saw it still shifting smoothly for the next 100,000km.

I don't believe it is an engine problem; no CEL; no OD flashing light. Engine seems fine in all aspects I can observe. No, I can't scan for trouble codes but I wondered if that would reveal anything helpful.

Well, the fluid level is fine and I did the sniff test and visual test of what was on the dipstick and determined there was nothing wrong with the fluid. But at least I did that much.

I wholeheartedly agree. I won't present it as if I know what to fix but if they ask I want to be able to speak plainly.

A test drive with your trusted mechanic would be a good place to start. I would hope he hooks up his scan tool go's to misfire counters and drives it at conditions that we normally see misfires happen at.

This is a common issue most all customers can not explain it well all they know is this is going to be a major issue that may break the bank.

This is like a no crank are no start very few understand how to put those two words in the right place they must be used correctly to duplicate the issue.

Are you able to answer questions are just want to ramble on are just hear others talk about their issues that have noting to do with yours.

When was the last time the fluid and filter was changed?

Like many they never answers questions I ask one he did not answer it. My advice.

"A test drive with your trusted mechanic would be a good place to start. I would hope he hooks up his scan tool go's to misfire counters and drives it at conditions that we normally see misfires happen at."

My gut its a misfire if not its primed for 8 new OEM spark plugs and 8 new OEM ignition coils. Why trust yer gut it can be proven rater easily with a good scan tool.

If his trusted mechanic can not eliminate misfires he needs a new mechanic not the internet.

Yes, a quality scan tool can read codes if there are any stored or pending, it can read misfires, it can also control the transmission and other solenoids to see if they are working. There's a lot more to it then the quick scan at a parts store that is in the business of selling parts. Repairing vehicles is a lot more than a guessing game and parts replacement but few want to pay for diagnosis and fewer want to do it including many mechanics.

Which lead to this reply.

Hobo.. You didn’t ask a question. You wrote two sentences/statements ending the second with a period then placed a lone “?” after them and closed with answer that. What is he supposed to answer? Many YTers get all wrapped up when you make a spelling or grammar correction, in my opinion a grammar error has caused this lack of conveying your request.
If you would have placed “Do these scenarios describe your symptoms” before your question mark that probably would have made your reply more clear as to receiving a response.
