2010 Neutral safety switch bracket

I ended up taking apart the gear shifter assembly to replace the swivel piece that is part of the lever to get rid of most of the sloppy shifting and noticed there was no neutral switch, so I decided to make the bracket and bar that engages the switch. The problem I'm having is that when I shift the lever into the "Park" position it seems to work fine when adjusted to the position, but when I place the shift lever into 1st gear, the bar that contacts the switch, won't allow the shifter to fully engage into the 1st position and binds up against the switch.

I don't have the shifter assembly installed on the tractor and was wonder if that might make a difference, but if it is binding now, it doesn't seem like would make any difference at all.

The service manual says that there should be 1/8" of an inch for proper adjustment between the shift bar and switch, and that the switch should work in either "Neutral", "Park", or "Tow" position. I'm having a hard time understanding how this setup is supposed to work. If I can't get it to work, It will just have to do without a safety switch.

Are you working with the early or late serial number design?

A photo or two would sure help!

So this is what you are working with?

Yes, that's the early setup for my shifter, and here is a pic of where the bar attaches.

I'm trying to visualize just what you've got going on.

A few years back I replaced just the switch in a customer's early S.N. 2010 and don't recall having much trouble getting it set u to work properly.

Whats happening is when I shift the lever into 1st gear, the bar is binding into the switch and not going all the way into the shift slot. It just seems like bar should be on the "Shift Change Quadrant" because it doesn't go as far in the "Park" position.

Is it possible parts have been swapped/changed/updated and you need a switch actuating "arm" (1) that has a bend in it , like the later serial numbered tractors used?

There was no brackets, and no switch. Someone had removed everything long ago, that's why I ended up making my own switch holder and bar. The original parts from JD are priced outrageous. I made the switch holder from 1/8" angle iron. I can adjust it anyway I want,Long or short, but I'm thinking I might have to assemble everything on the tractor to see where things line up with the shift linkage connected. I'll take some pics tomorrow of what i've got with it all together.

Sounds like an interesting project!

I enjoy fabbing up missing parts and linkages and such.

Yes, inventing your own designs is fun. I've invented brackets to keep me from shifting the rear PTO lever into the wrong position, I've invented brackets to redesign the stomp-down Massey clutch pedal [ a real PITA] into a press-forward clutch pedal, it is fun.

Almost all 2010's are in a junk yard. You could find the correct bracket there. I think Old on this site has a parts tractor.

I think I have figured out why my brackets aren't working. Looking at the parts diagram, I thought that the bar was suppose to engage the switch in a straight line. Instead, after finding a picture of the complete assembly, the bar slips past the spring plate that allows the shifter to go into the 1st gear groove. So there's a certain spot that the bar rotates to engage the switch in "Park" and "Neutral".
I don't think I would have figured it out if there wasn't a picture of the assembly. Now I have to make another bracket that angles up, or make a bar that has a rotating angle to it to engage the switch.

Here is the new homemade Neutral safety switch brackets, seems to work pretty good so far. Took me awhile to get the right angles and for it to work correctly. Here is a few pics showing how it works with the switch engaged when in "Park" or "Neutral" and when in 1st gear or any other gear the switch is disengaged.
