Just came back from the feed store they just got a load of hay from Alberta (750 mi. away).
The bales are the size of small squares, except they're only 24 inches long and they weigh 100 lbs. Wow,are they ever packed tight as you can imagine. They're tied with 5 bands of poly straping. What kind of baler makes these type of bales. It must be a hydraulic plunger.

The average green hay bale weighs somewhere around 45-60 pounds.

That sounds to me like two haybales compressed together for an eco-package.

I'd sure HATE to cut them nylon straps - probably be enough oomph to push two cars apart.

No they stay pretty much compressed.
Timothy, brome, some alfalfa in it.A one inch thick flake weighs about five pounds.

I handled 100 pound bales of alfalfa from Canada over 40 years ago. They were wire tied then.we used hooks and 2 men to handle them

Not sure where they came from, but we used to get those on occasion from up north, I can remember the wire ties, never saw bales tied with wire, everyone used sisal here, they were heavy, between the shows we used to run and trucking horses, sometimes an odd bale would show up on the truck left over from a trucking job, or a load bought for a show, suckers certainly were heavy, not like what we baled, and I sure was not slinging those around, how'd you like to get whacked by one of them coming off a kicker, I can recall at a young age having a regular size one come off a kicker and me not seeing it, that'll learn ya, one of them would hurt ya.

Lots of Timothy, especially, gets shipped to Japan and other points east. Regular bales are compressed by a machine so as to get enough weight in the containers to make it worthwhile to ship across the pond. I think they usually do it at the port, because they first have to fumigate before compressing, to get rid of the dread Hessian fly.

Those are normal hay bales in Canada that the wife and kids also help load and throw around. What kind of sissy 40lb hay bales are you guys talking about?

Yep, and we like them short like that so the men and bigger children can tuck a couple under each arm and nudge a couple more along the ground with their feet. Saves trips and builds character.
