24 volt DC motor

I have an applicator for putting additive in silage as you fill. It came with a 12 volt motor that burned out. the replacement motor is 24 volt. the applicator can be adjusted so the slower running speed is fine. QUESTION IS ?? will running that 24V motor off a 12 V source hurt that motor ????

If it is a shunt wound motor it will cause it to overheat to run it on low voltage. The slower it runs, the hotter it will get. The speed of DC motor is controled by controling the current flow in it's shunt fields. Adding or removing resistance from the field circuit. You will need 24 volts through the armature.

I'd hook two 12 volt battries in series to run it then charge the battries one at a time. Or better hook the battries in parallel when charging them when not running the 24 volt motor.

Running a 24V motor on 12V will drop the HP to 1/4 not 1/2 of the nameplate value.
As long as the max current for the motor is not exceeded. You will get away with 12V on a 24V motor.
