24 volt starter?

I have a 1250 oliver gas.. I know they are not to well liked. I have messing with it getting it to run a little better. The starter when out and I had it rebuilt the guy told me it was a 24 volt starter which I knew those tractors are 24 volt. I had assumed that this one had been converted to 12 volt I have checked it charging and it does the normal 12 to 14 volts. I have looked and it still has the fiat voltage regulator on it. I still have a generator on it to. Is it possible that 12 volts is able to turn the 24volt starter over? If it had not been convert wouldn't it charge over 14 volts? Shouldn't the voltage regulator been changed?

1 or 2 batterys??? If it has 2 batterys it can be wired to start on 24 volts but charge on 12 volts. A lot of big rigs and set up that way

It has one battery in it. That was how it was when I got it. It has never ran right or started correctly.

It is a gas tractor btw.

On the wiring I understand how to wire the batteries together to get 24 volts out of them. But I don't understand how you can get them to charge unless you use a battery oscillator

On the big rigs they have 2 or 3 solinoids that switch things from 12 volt and 24 volts so it starts on 24 volts but then after it starts it switches things back to 12 volts so as to charge the battery with a smaller alternator

Old is talking about a series/parallel switch. We did a 1250 diesel that way once because the man purchased the tractor then the next year purchased a 5400 air planter which had the 12 volt motors. I sent you an e-mail, Those switches were a little pricey 35-40 years ago and they are about extint in todays trucks. You also have some battery maintaince items with those switches. If you didn't get the e-mail let me know. I have a plan B I think. Myself I didn't mind those little tractors. J.

You could wire that like the old John Deere 730 Diesels were to get 24 volts charged with a 12 volt generator.They had 12 volt lights too,but a 24 volt starter. They had 4 six volt batteries hooked in series,but there was a ground wire that ran to the frame from between the second and third batteries. I would imagine that you could do the same with 2 twelves. I know,it doesn't make sense to me either,but then I'm no electrician. I just know I had one and the lights and generator quit working. The old neighborhood 2 cylinder mechanic asked me if that ground wire was broken. It was. I put a new one on it and they worked again.

I am going to try to figure something out thought about doing something like you are taking about. I just have to work it out in my head first how it should work.

Which I am going to do the bad thing put the starter back on and try 12 volts to it and see if it spins fast enough.
