245 position control problem

Does anyone know if the lift shaft splines need to be timed correctly to the inner lift arm (the one connected to the piston dog bone)or does it have a master spline? I know the outer lift arms have a master spline but am not sure about the inner arm. I have adjusted my top cover by the IT manual and Big Dean"s instructions but something is not quite right. The position control works well but is very sensitive. Just the slightest movement of the position lever raises the arms three or more inches. Total movement of full up to full down occurs in less than 1/2 of the quadrant. Linkages inside appear to be OK with nothing bent or missing. There is no groove worn on the ramp of the cam of the inner lift arm. I am thinking maybe the cam is out of time on the lift shaft as I can tell someone has been inside this before and maybe got something out of whack. Any suggestions before I remove the lift cover again?

Thanks for any help!

Hello, The main ahaft has a master spline for the outer arms and inner ram arm. It is not possible to refit them incorrectly.
Did you have the special tools for the adjustment. I suspect that you may not have used the ram-arm gauge which holds the ram arm off the casing while the adjustment is done. If it is not that, move the quadrant lever with the engine stopped and observe the action of the pump lever. This may give an indication of the problem. It will probably be necessary to remove the cover again and go through the procedure.

Thanks for the reply. I did use a 3/8" thick metal plate as a gauge between the lift arm and cover. This came from Big Deans instructions but maybe I should try to find the proper special gauge from a Massey dealer. I was really being careful to follow all steps and maintain the 3 Lbs. of pull while adjusting everything. It is like the cam has to move too much to neutralize the control valve. Could a bad control valve cause this?

The gauge is thicker than 3/8. A sketch is attached. There has to be something that is loosing the sensitivity such as bent linkage.

Thanks David,
I will have my machinist mill me out one of these gauges to your specs in the sketch. Great Job! You may be correct in something is bent with the linkages as I had to replace the position control lever with a new one. This is the one that looks like a dog. The old one would continously pop out of the roller. The retaining spring was attached. I ordered a new one and noticed it was made a little different in that the "DOG EAR" if you will, was a little longer. This new lever does not pop out but I am thinking the old style shouldn't either. Perhaps the roller linkage is bent and I can't tell it. Does this sound like a possibility?

Thanks for all your help.

Hi Warner,
Yes, bent linkage is a possibility. All the rollers are made to work in a straight line. Any mis-alignment will interupt the smooth operation.
