250 massey not running

Back in 2001 I bought a remanufactured 250 from Hitches of Hartford in England. It has 400 hours on it now. I used it one day and the next day when I fired it up it started chugging like it was running on 2 cylinders. I changed the fuel filter which did have some water in it but, that did not help. So after taking it to a friend, who talked to a shop, we sent the injectors off to be rebuilt. We put them in, bled the lines and it would not hit a lick. I am getting fuel up to the injectors but, how can I tell how much is enough? We also checked the pump timing which seemed pretty close. My question, is it time to rebuild the pump? Any help would be appreciated.

you said you have fuel at injectors but how much pressure is there not sure but most must have around 3000 psi.. crack one or two line and run the starter with the line lose but not real lose to make sure you have ALL the air out even with the lines a little lose it should start. are you sure your valve train did not come loss and some valves are not opening

Hi,
Think I might have answered your posting before. I know Hitchings of Hereford. First of all have you checked the filter in the fuel tank?
There should be one fitted abve the fuel tap. These filters come off and it is possible for the tap to be blocked with debris. If that is OK is your lift pump working OK? Remove the outlet pipe and operate the lever. There should be a positive jet of fuel produced with each stroke. You may have one or two fuel filters fitted. Are these clean? If the filters are OK, open the 5/16 screws on the side of the pump and operate the lift pump. You should have a fine jet of fuel coming from each one but sometimes a good stream of air-free fuel is good enough. Slacken all injector pipe nuts slightly and crank the engine until you get fuel through. If should be visible as a 'spit' not a trickle. If it is a trickle it suggests that the main pump has failed.
Pump timing will not change on its own. Assuming that it was rebuilt correctly and you have done 400 hours everything would appear to be OK.
Even if the pump had turned in its adjusting slots it would normally start but would smoke at the least. I suspect that your problem will be a blocked tap/filter or failed lift pump.
Let us know.

Hi Dave,
The tank did not have a filter in it. But I am getting fuel all the way to the injectors which is a spit of fuel. So my question is; am I looking at a valve train problem? Can you check this by compression?
Thanks again,
Scott

Hi,
Valve timing will not alter unless you have a major timing gear failure. A compression test will not show any problems here. One of the next steps would be to remove the bonnet and tank and rocker cover to check whether you are getting injection an instant before bothe valves are closed on the compression stroke.
Before that it might be worth you trying to start the tractor by towing it.
Often in the past we have had tractors that would not start on the battery after the fuel system had been disturbed. Towing (please use a rope, not a chain) generates a faster cranking speed and has worked. It has only been necessary to do this once.
