i recently bought a 255 massey without multi power. on a hill it has no engine brakeing the rmps will keep increaing. Is this normall or not and what could be causing this

Is tractor gas or diesel? How steep is the hill? Diesels have better compression braking than gas engines do but if hill is very steep or towing any load at all engine speed can increase. You must have 8 speed trans, 12 speed MP was optional.

it has the diesel motor and the 8 speed trans. i just bought the tractor and noticed it bush hogging on a few small hills i can have my rpms set at 1200 and it would shoot up to 1800 or better. Its not that big of deal but i have a few larger hills in my hay field and dont want the bailer shoving me over the hill. Most tractors iv been on will hold back but this one acts like a truck or something

Early 255 had 203 cube Perkins, later had 236 which would have advantage over smaller engine when engine braking is needed. Sounds like hills may be steep enough to need a little brake use going downhill. Have a 165D with MP, still needs brake help sometimes.

i was just wondering if there was a screw on the injection pump that controlled the govoner that could may help me out a little

Inertia? I've got many an hour on 255 and 245 bush hogging, ALL of them will increase RPM when going down a steep hill whether hogging or not especially in High range, not so much in Low range. Using Engine PTO(pull back) is better than Ground speed PTO(push forward) when hogging. Reduce the power setting and continue. 1200 RPMs is a very low setting for hogging unless the grass is very thin, 540 PTO RPM is closer to 1800 engine RPM. Your tachometer is marked for that setting.
I "rarely" go down a hill, I set the wheels at full width and go across the hill. PS, the 255 is light in the nose, I have two BIG wheel weights hanging off the bumper.

I have a 255 with a 203 Perkins. My Dad bought it new and it's been used on hills since. It will over-rev if you allow it. Need to watch the gears and work the brakes as needed. A great old tractor.

I might add that the standard work gear on the 255 on hills for me is 3L. Can bush hog pasture in 1H in light to medium, not too rough, and not steep. 1500-1800 is good speed.
