2590 Injection Pump Q?

Pulled the 2590 into the shop to clean her up, change the oil, and get ready to do some ploughing. Discovered that there was a gallon and half too much oil in the engine.

The last time that the tractor would have been used was last fall pulling wagons. The oil would have been checked daily then and I do not remember there being anything out of the ordinary. So, I'm thinking maybe a bad front seal on the injection pump leaked by all winter.

I am going to pull the injectors and pop test them. If I see anything questionable I will take the injectors to the local diesel shop for rebuilding.

I'm thinking that while I am that far into it I should replace the front seal on the injection pump. I had a Massey that was making oil and it turned out to be a bad front seal on the injection pump (it would fill the crankcase just sitting).

So the question is: if I remove the injection pump, can the front seal be replaced fairly easily (like on the CAV pump in my Massey), or does the whole injection pump have to come apart?

Thanks,
JP.

More than likely the oring in the transfer pump on the side of the pump is the culprit. 2 10mm nuts to take it off. Unscrew the big cap on the transfer pump and take the plunger out. Get a replacement oring and assemble. Cheaper and easier to do that and check for fuel in the oil than tp pull the pump.

I kind of forgot that this is an inline pump, not a rotory!

So is the bottom end of the injection pump (the cam shaft) lubricated by engine oil?

Miserable damn little o-ring, though!

Another check is to take the cover off the side of the pump...held on with 2 10mm bolts. Pump up the primer pump as hard as it will go and look for fuel leaking past the plungers. If none leak it is good to go.

Removed the lift pump and dissembled it. The Oring is still soft but has a ridge around the OD so I am going to get a new Oring and try that first.

I will try the "primer pump up" as suggested by casecollectorsc and report back findings.

Thanks,
JP.

Have about 15 hrs on the tractor and the oil level is steady, so the oring appears to have been the problem. I was a little concerned because the replacement oring (from my selection kit) was a tight fit, I had to press the plunger in and it shaved a very thin layer of rubber from the id of the oring. I ordered a new viton oring that I will install next time in the shop.
