Yeah, it will bolt in but you will have to switch some parts. I put a G230 (Allis version of the B230 used in the 40. I switched the governor, oil pan, front engine plate and rear engine mounting plates. Will also have to adjust the throttle linkage and air cleaner hose. I used the manifold off the G230 which uses a larger carb.
The pic sorta shows which parts I switched.

ok i see you put the cs stuff on the allis motor duh! i dont know what i was thinking been a long day sounds like it wouldnt be to bad of a swap thanks

As Matt said, if you are using a 262 from a Gleaner combine, you need to change the timing cover, governor, front and rear mounting plate, and the crankshaft pulley. The oil pan does NOT need to be changed nor does the rocker cover. You will also need to add/fabricate a oil filler tube on the side of the engine similar to the 273 - or else you'll have to take the hood off to add oil. Its a relatively easy switch. I've done more than I care to admit... If you are using a 262 out of a Allis D-19 all of the above may or may not apply...

Couldn't remember about the oil pan, I think my gleaner one was dented. I didn't want the breather on the top of the other valve cover. I changed it 5.5 years ago, memory is a little foggy.

I would think twice or three times about replacing the Buda 273 with a 262. If the 273 is a good engine or in good condition for rebuild they are in high demand and the reason most replace the 273 in E5 or 50's is because the 273 is so hard to get. It is getting to be the same with E4 or 40's and the Buda 230. Nothing wrong with 262's but if it where me that 273 wouldn't get out of my sight. The 262 gas in the D19 and in the Gleaner combine are the same engine. You will need to use the E5,s governor and change linkage.

thanks for the input mike.the reason i was thinking about the 262 was i was wanting to make alot more power but i didnt want to ruin the 273 and you are right can,t find them no more.do you think a 262 manifold and carb would make a big enough increase in power to justify the carb and manifold swap?

It sounds like you have a complete good running 50, you do not yet have an Allis engine. Think about looking for another tractor with a blown engine while you are hunting an Allis donor, and then make something out of the both. That would be worth the effort. It's a big shame to tear something appart that ain't broke. for 7 horsepower?

Colfax Tractor Parts in Colfax Ia ought to have several Gleaner 262's to choose from. The oil filler pipe is easily installed in the combine block. There is a plug that you knock out and then just press in the tractor style filler. I just went through that with a combine block that I'm putting in a D17D. Gas or diesel, the blocks are the same. You can also use a block that has provisions for a block mounted water pump by making a block off plate.

thanks everyone.change carb and manifold sounds like that would be a pretty simple upgrade to gain 7 hp.what about a little head work also, match manifold to head, valve job, might even shave little off head etc...any ideas

50 owner, I can't say for sure about the D19 governor because i've not delt directly with one from a D19. I'm sorry i should have stated the combine governor is the one i was talking about. My fault i just wasn't thinking about how i made my reply. I might add there are those that might argue the combine governor will work. Well all i will say is good luck getting it to work correctly.

E5, sorry about slow response. I haven't checked a manifold & carb swap only by dyno so i can't give you an true answer. There are guys that say it makes a differance, there are also guys who say it doesn't. I know of one guy who reworks the stock carb and uses stock manifold, says that works best. I have tried changing carbs while on the dyno along with setting air fuel mixture with meter and didn't make differance in HP but did add torque. I would have to see 7 HP proven on dyno, i doubt you'll gain 7 HP.
