2640 engines

I have a 2640 serial number 2640B 284562T with a bad motor. Balancer shaft bushings came out and send the shaft through the oil pan. ruined the block too. the engine number is 4276DR01 434127T. And its block number is R73657. I found another 2640 around here I can buy fairly cheap and was thinking about switching the motors because the rest of this tractor is very rough. its serial number is 2640B 255732T. And engine is 276DR01 390314T. But it has a different block number. It is R54620. Will this motor work in my tractor? And also what else can you tell me about these tractors using the serial numbers. Year, options, etc. Thanks.

The engines will interchange but the number R54620 does not appear in the 2640 current parts catalog on JDparts.com.

Dont see why it wouldnt work, they are both 276 cubic inch engines. Looks like the one you are looking into is older than your original by the serial numbers.

Tim thanks I have dealt with them before and might again. The tractor I can buy here is only about 7 miles away and I can buy the whole tractor for 2500. At this time I just would like to know if that motor will work.

Yes any 2630 or 2640 engine will work,,if you don't care about dropping a little on the horse power a 219 will also work out of a 2020 or 3300 combine..

The reason I know about the engine at Blufton is a friend of mine was looking for one to put in a 2510,,but he didn't go on with the project...

To my knowledge any 300 series 4 cyl engine will fit your 2640. This includes engines built in Dubuque,Mannheim & Saran.

I'd jump all over that deal. What is wrong with this other 2640 ? Can it be used as is?

Thank you everyone for your replies. This other tractor just looks very rough. 3pt arms are broke. drawbar support is broke. front end is pieced together. owner said engine ran good and hi lo was recently rebuilt. hasn't been used much since. I will probably go ahead and get it and put the motor in my tractor and keep the rest for parts.

The earlier ones were built in Dubuque, IA with U.S. built engines. Production was later transferred to France with French built engines. There are some parts on the engines that are not the same, oil pump, oil pump tube, etc. If you end up with engines from different plants set the two side by side and compare parts.

Yes there are a few internal differences, but I'm sure the will interchange as a complete unit.

Production was split between Dubuque and Mannheim Germany with some "identical" tractors being simultaneously produced. Mid 40 series all production was moved to Germany to make Dubuque all industrial. The engines used in Mannheim production were built in Saran France.

You must have missed the date stamps showing this is a February 2014 thread. I doubt that engine is still available, but they might have another. If you did not notice Tim S did not have the engine, he only knew about it because a friend was looking for one back then. I suggest you contact Anderson Tractor directly to find out what they have. You should also contact PartsASAP the parent company of Yesterday's Tractor, which provides this site. They operate several salvage yards.

Which block, Structural or Industrial? A tractor should have a structural block as it is a structural member of the tractor. Industrial blocks mount on frames. Not saying an Industrial block will not work, but should have the side plates on the tractor, even if the tractor does not have a loader.
