2640 wont start

I recently purchased a 2640 with a 146 loader. went to start it up at the previous owners the other day and couldn't get it to start. I knew batteries were shot so put new ones in and sprayed starting fluid in the little hole in intake manifold where ether line goes in. engine turned over good but didn't even attempt to fire. I also took the air filter out thinking it was plugged. It should at least try to start on the ether. I am told that it always needs a shot of ether to start.

You really don't want to be giving a Dubuque engine a dose of ether when it isn't rotating. In fact with those engines ether is for life and death emergencies, not a daily starting assist.
Check the engine coolant corrosion inhibited. Otherwise a new set of sleeves will be in that tractor's future.
Did you check the transmission filter and screen for clutch material or powdered metal?

I know this sounds silly but i have had them actually "flood" from too much raw fuel ...and not start..

Are the 300 series more prone to this flooding than the Waterloo built engines? I remember that some of the used tractors that came to my area from West TX had a fuel line from lift pump to intake manifold added so one could pump raw fuel in intake manifold for cold weather starting aid. Plus that's also the purpose of the hand operated pump on the dash of the 2010 diesels.

Hey guys thanks for the replies but bad news. I got it started. Ran for 2 min sounded awful. Steam was pouring out the breather pipe and I was just ready to shut it off when it made a loud bang shut itself off. something left loose in the bottom half and put a hole through the oil pan and all the oil ran out. Now I need a new motor! Any ideas where to find one other than deere? I knew it had some problems and I didn't pay much for it but was hoping it didn't need a motor this quick. Still sitting at the previous owners place!

If you're around Michigan, check out rf engines in morrice Michigan. Helped me out with a Perkins diesel. I think they sell used parts too.

That is why not to use ether. It breaks engines.
The good news is good used 3,4 & 6 cylinder engines are rather common and modest in price.

You don't need a new motor. Why throw good money after bad. There are too many other possible problems with that tractor other than the motor.
Consider the experience as an education and get rid of it.

A 2640 is not a bad tractor. They were the only AG tractor to have the long stroke 4cylinder the 4276 engine. The 2440 had the short stroke 4239 engine. Both of these engines are still in production with a few changes as the 4045 and the 4039.

Does the tractor have a two speed, and what type of PTO clutch. Does it have the big hydraulic pump. All of these questions are about if it is worth rebuilding.

I have fixed a lot of them and it was a while ago and it was expensive and you can fix and fix and fix on one if it has been abused. The worst thing you can do is clean the sump screen and put it back in without finding out where all that stuff came from. The next time the rearend will be full of powdered steel that has gone through the transmission pump, hydraulic pump, Steering, SCVs, Loader valve. and they are all messed up.
With a closed center system one little leak makes the system useless. Open center is a lot more forgiving then the closed center radial pumps of the old johnies.

p just got a complete engine from all state parts use to be mo.tractor out of sikeston mo the engine came for up north in one of the other salvage yard cost 3000 with 1000 core it run good has 1year warranty also took core back to sikeston mo yard

Picky Picky Picky, Yes the 2630 and 2640 have the same engine.

Long stroke.

Call it picky if you so choose ""BUT"" I think information posted should be CORRECT!!!!!!!!! Plus if you want me to get picky there are several later model JD Ag tractors that utilize the 276 cid(4.5L) engines.

OK

Soooooooo What is the long stroke 6 cylinder 300 series if we are in the tivia mode. Old style not Liter type name.

I don't think it was ever put in an AG machine but I am not sure about that.

I don't know of any.
