I was wondering what color the fan on my 27D should be, also what do you guys use for yellow paint. thanks alot, Chris see you in NY

Don't know what color is "correct" but if you do any of them yellow just get a fine artist brush like sable hair and use JD yellow right out of the can.

Chris,
During a discussion of his 1927 Corn Borer D, Greg Stephen commented on a bulletin issued March 1927 that all fans were to be painted white for visibility, and a follow-up bulletin in April 1927 stating that immediately all fans were to be painted yellow (probably because dealers were not required to stock white paint).

When I restoreed my 27 D, I sandblasted the fan and only found green paint, no spots of white or yellow, so I painted it green, but I think they are suppose to be yellow, from what I was told in the past is that the JD"s didn"t have much of a fan shroud and the yellow paint was to make the fan more visible.

I just finished putting a 29 D together and there was still evidence of what coler the fan was. now get this, the front of the blade[towards rad] was green and the back was yellow and that is the way I repainted it. Go figer. ---Harold. PS I think the yellow was brushed on after the tractor was painted.

Duane that goes along with what Mr Thinker in the Oct 1998 Green Mag said,
23 to 26 -GREEN
27--------White
27/28 to Mid 40-Yellow
Mid 40 up--GREEN
I'll dig out that issue and post word for word soon.
Lorry Dunning ????????States ALL-Yellow till 1950, 51 up green. as I said ???????????
Bob

The bulletin makes sense for 27 D 47229, built March 24, 1927 that was a corn borer D and you could tell the fan was hand painted white over the green.

Lorry Dunning isn't exactly known for his attention to detail or his knowledge of JD tractors, so I don't think I'd take that too seriously.

holy cow I got some good info there. thanks all! The fan is yellow brushed on. just for info the tractor is # 50641. Any of you guys going to NY tommorrow
