2750 running hot

Hello folks,
I just purchased a JD 2750 with only 7 hours on a fresh overhaul at 5100 hours. My question is engine temperature. I have not pulled it hard yet at all and according to the gauge, after idling around for 30-45 minutes, it is almost in the red. The radiator is no where close to boiling over. It appears to have a new temp. sending unit and I have pulled the wires from the tach/gauges off and checked connections. The radiator is clean. I am wondering about the thermostat or water pump. How can I tell if they are working properly? Can you tell by touching the engine block if a engine is too hot? The tractor has a block heater and I can touch those hoses when it shows to be hot and they do not feel that hot. Also the lower radiator hose is just mildly warm to the touch. The oil filter doesn't feel too hot either to the touch. So, could this be just the gauge or does it sound like the engine is running too hot? The tractor was overhauled by a Deere dealer and was put on the dyno for a couple of hours and supposedly checked out ok with them. I would sure appreciate your all's thoughts on this matter before. Thanks for your time and suggestions.....Jim

I just had a 2630 in the shop that was acting like this, it appeared that the water wasn't pumping,, the owner had a new radiator installed and it didn't help,,I removed the water pump and the plastic impeller was "gone" nothing but the end of the shaft, I rebuilt it useing a steel impeller and that fixed it,,you might want to check this idea out...

They repaired the symptom (engine) but didn't look for the cause (cooling failure).
I agree it sounds like failed water pump or a bunged rad.

Maybe you could install a mechanical temp gauge to verify temp. IMHO later Manheim JD utility tractors left a lot to be desired in electrical wiring especially the ones with SGB's.

The single most unreliable part fitted to Mannheim tractors ( apart from the entire hydraulic system ) is the temp sender . I would check this is OK before going any further . If it doesn't seem hot then it probably isn't .

Thank you all for your replies. I have been running the tractor a little more this weekend and thinking at this time it is a ill-functioning water pump. After the tractor has been run for over 30 minutes, the gauge is showing almost hot, the radiator cap is hardly warm to the touch, the radiator is not even warm, and the lower radiator hose is almost cool feeling. I even tried a different radiator cap today, with no change. With the range of motion of the temp gauge, I feel it is working and it was replaced when the O/H was completed. I just can't understand with the JD dealership would not have checked the water pump when doing the O/H???? Does anyone know if I can get a water pump rebuild kit? A new water pump is over $300. Any more thoughts or suggestions would greatly be appreciated! Jim

Before I R&R water pump I'd verify correct water temp with a gauge with a capillary tube!!!!!!!!!

RE62659 KIT,WATER PUMP SERVICE ADD 62.00 USD

Well.....I think I got it fixed. I pulled the water pump off and took out the thermostat. The water pump was ok, but I think the thermostat was stuck closed. I changed it and put it all back together tonight and so far, it is running right where it should be....thank you all for your input. Jim

Jim if you have access to a small press the pump isnt hard to rebuild by yourself , measure in the center of the pulley down inside to see how fare the end of the shaft is use this measurment when reassembling , a local machine shop sould have a press you can borrow , i use a set of hardened blocks and remove the pully first , than you can flip the housing over and support it as close as possible to the center push the bearing out from the inside and away you go, foot note 1or 2 out of a 100 will crack the housing if you are not close enough when supporting it , good luck
