Unless it is a transplant the diesel 283 was only in the 1650. 1750, 1755 had a naturally aspirated 310 and the 1950-T 1855, 1955 all had the turbo'd engine.
 
Are you talking only direct injection engines here? Don't forget the 1800 tractors also had a 283 or a 310 depending on series. Crankshaft forging numbers would be easier than removing the heads. The heads are not all alike either as the 1650 direct injection engines have smaller intake valves.
 
the engine is not in a tractor i was going to pull the injector and run a rod down in it and turn the motor over measure the distance
