looking for quick general info on a 2840. thanks for the help. hp, strong/weak points, gas or diesel available or just diesel, hydraulic issues, final drives, trans, whatever i can learn - its coming up tomorrow at auction & a friend is interested. the rear axle appears to have slid out completely. are there planetary finals or? worth of one in average condition? weight? again thanks! its a '78.

Don't buy it! Unless it goes from about 3000 its not worth it and having a bad axle makes it worth less. You would be luckey to get 70hp outta it. The engines are one of the worst designs and are known for smokin. I don't believe they ever had a gas model. The transmission aren't any better with the hi/lo being pricey to repair. He would be money ahead to buy 3020, 2940, or 2950. With an axle being out of its only worth scrap price!

I agree with the rest of the post,,save your money and buy a Waterlou tractor instead, 2840's have a "bad" track record...I could wear this key board out with bad stories about them...

Ordinary I would say yes but........ This tractor or any other has been so completely beat and abused. It's only future is the salvage yard.

So how is your request detailed information just hours before a sale my fault?
You might find something on external_link ?
That smashed up tractor is only a parts donor.

(quoted from post at 19:53:22 02/11/10) 2840, 1010 1020 2020 were the poorest machines Deere made. Stay away from it.

The 1020 & 2020 are now old but are good utility tractors. I agree the 1010/2010D & 2840's were JD worst efforts at tractors.

2840's were hard starters when new and got worse with age and their hyd's gave a lot of trouble.

Hey gtx,
I worked for a John Deere dealer during the time these tractors came out and were in ciculation. They had all kinds of problems, the worst being the engine. That would be the one of the last Deeres I would buy. I've seen comments here that said the 2020 aren't good. That wasn't my experence. They stood up well and used correctly, performed well.

Guess we have a couple melons then because our main to tractors are a JD 1010 and 2840. 2840 has a cab and loader. Never had any trouble with either one of them other than usual maintenance. Although we do take better care of things than alot of folks that we know. These are not pampered either. We work them hard and they sit outside. 2840 does need plugged in in the winter though; but so did every other Deere diesel of that era! If I got to inspect it real good and test it out a little I would not think twice about buying another 1010 or 2840. Both great tractors in my opinion.

Got one here with over 12000 hours on it, the smoothies motor of all deere's here..Cranks good .. have had one hyd line crack, but nothing of the problems the 4230 has given... Look for the one with just a pipe coming out the hood...last model
