I rented both a 2840, & a 2940 in the late 90's. I never had any trouble with both of them. BUT... The dealer told me up front that the 2940 replaced the 2840 because of a plaugue of engine problems. Same HP; however the 2840 has 329 engine; 2940 has the 359cin engine. Used them for pulling a JD 6-30" 7000 planter. 2940 went over the hills a little faster I believe. Nebraska tests say diffrently! 2840 pulls more by their standards! The hood looks nicer on 2940 at the dashboard. Deere raised it to acomidate a sound guard cab.

(quoted from post at 00:30:03 03/12/10) Percectly fine if taken care of and not abused. A horror story if beaten.
Nothing different than any other machine.

I disagree as I have experience of selling & repairing 2840's when they were new. 2840's are down next to 2010/1010 diesels in reliability. Many 2840 wouldn't start easily without destroking hyd pump after a few 100 hrs use. Had one 2840 under warranty that pto clutch snap ring popped out ruining trans. case. Most 2840's had multiple hyd ailments.

They're are a few exceptions as some people got some use out of them but overall they're not one of JD's best ideas.

Both could be good tractors if fixed and updated properly. Just about all of the 40 series had cold starting and smoking problems. Also had many problems with steel hydraulic pipes rattling loose inside the trans. Once those two issues were fixed with factory updates, the tractors were fine. By now, all that should be "old news."

If you deem the 2940 to be "junk", please give some specific details. Like some other posters, I was working on them since they were new and we sold many.

We had more major problems with the 55 series 4WDs and then any other Deere tractors we ever sold. Deere put the wrong gears into them and the front wheels turn different speeds then the rear. I had to split and fix many new tractors.

I ran a 2940 for over 15 years with a 148 loader found it to be a great machine. Also planted corn beans with it. Used it every day as chore tractor Wondering what you hated about it.

Hey ph-1,
When I worked for a JD dealer the 2840's were in their prime. We experienced a lot of problems with poor and hard starting, burn your eyes diesel smoke, pto drive problems related to bad steel lines in the transmission, and a general unreliability. I would assume most of these that are left must be somewhat repaired, but a 2840 wouldn't be my first choice. I seemed to remember the 2940's as a much better tractor with most of the 2840's problems repaired.
