2940 That Needs Help!

I have a hydraulic problem with a 2940. It began in the spring, with the hi/lo dropping out of hi when the idle went down. Also had some problems shifting into the 4-8 gear. I took it to a mechanic, who said he didn"t have time to split the tractor, but the transmission pump was bad, after he put a new main hydraulic pump in. I was told I could use it through the spring, and then bring it back to him when he had more time.

Soon after, I lost reverse completely, and hi/lo got so bad that it stayed in lo all the time, with the selector lever having no effect. It didn"t even make a different sound when moved to hi.

The tractor still has all it"s power (in lo). 4WD is strong, as is the PTO. When in hi, the hydraulics for the loader and steering go away completely.

I have the tractor completely torn apart. No broken line, no mangled fluid pump, nothing to explain lack of oil pressure.

The reverse gear bearing had disintegrated. So that explained that part, but some of the synchronizer rings are discolored, as if they got hot. Shifting was a bit sticky, but not enough so that I thought it was a big problem. I am thinking, between these two symptoms, that there could be a lube oil problem as well.

This is just a stab at it,but last time I was in the back of a Deere shop I mechanic I knew was telling me (I asked) why he had this 2950 apart. I asked because I have one. Anyway, he showed me this metal hyd.oil line, about 9 inches long with a 90 degree turn in it, probably 3/4"diameter that I think he said was inside the transmission, he showed me where at the 90 the wall wore thin and blew out, he said once that happens there is a catastrophic hyd.oil pressure loss that ruins transmission.

I don"t even know if that transmission is the same as yours or it that is remotely related to your problem, but that is my thought since you can"t see any problem, might be that line inside the tranny, good luck

The blown hydraulic line was what I was hoping to find. An inexpensive, obvious fix... no such luck. I have removed every line and looked for any kind of damaged. Unless it's such a small crack that it only shows up under pressure... which I can't see being the case...

But thanks for letting me know which line was prone to leaking. I knew the was one, but not which...

Sounds like leakage in the Hi clutch, probably a sealing ring. Dont rule out a weak transmission pump either, just because its not mangled doesnt mean its not worn. I assume you've been good about changing your hyd filter and cleaning the inlet screen.
Low output and leakage on the transmission hydraulics is the cause of your problems, they feed the main pump and lubricate the transmission gears with the surplus after shifting the HiLo, PTO, and 4wd. Best get some service manuals if you dont have them already. They will help you understand the operation of system.
