2955 or 4040?

Hello all. I might be looking at on of these two tractors in the near future from a farm that unfortunatly is going out of business. I know that both were extremely well taken care of so the hours, maintenance, etc. are not relevant. My question is that I will be using the tractor for mowing and baling about 6000 squares and 100 rounds each year. I will also be using it to spread manure in the fall. Which one is the better tractor for these tasks? No loaders, no 4WD. I"ve read a lot about the clutch difference being a key factor between these two and I just didn"t want to buy a tractor that weren"t made for what I"ll be using it for. Any of them have a cab ? I think the 4040 may have a wet clutch and should be heavier built all around.

The 4040 is a better all around tractor. The 4040 will have a wet clutch which last for a long time. The 2955 has a dry clutch and won"t like all the clutching during round baling.

I"d definitely go for the 4040. It"s built heavier, has a wet clutch, parts are cheaper, and it"s much, much easier to work on in most cases.

I would consider the 2955 built on a "medium chassis", which is rather lighter than any GEN II through GEN V 4000 series tractors. The 4000 series tractors have a longer wheelbase, and a heavier frame. I'm quite sure there are farmers who will vouch for the 4040 more than the 2955, however, i'm not quite clear why.

The 2955 is a lot newer than the 4040. If that really doesn't make a difference to you, then you can't go wrong with EITHER one.

Take the 2955. if you want a loader, they're alot easier to use as a loader tractor. The 2955 is a lot newer of a tractor than a 4040, however, both are excelent tractors. either way, you can't go wrong

I'd go with the 4040 as well. I used to work for a neighbor that ran a 2955. It was in the shop more than it was in the field. Possibly the worst tractor John Deere has ever made.

Our neighbor has a 2940 which is about the same thing as a 2955 and it is a nice tractor. 8000 problem free hours other than the solenoid on the starter. Don't let Oliver Collectors scare you away from this tractor.

The 4040 is heavier built and all the above posts are correct about the clutch and what not. One thing I would think about is in cold weather operation the 2955 will start a lot better and start more reliably without a whiff of summer in a can.

Look at the transmission choices also. If the 4040 is a power shift that would be a whole lot handier in hay than the 8 speed with the rabbit/turtle hi-lo that is on the dash. If it’s quad range than that’s a draw.
