Undependable hydraulic system,, poor transmission ,, bad brake system,, I would not trade a good 4020 for 2- 29's.....

We have had one for years and its been a good tractor for us. It has been abused a lot and keeps coming back for more. Most issues have been due to a great deal of time moving and loading bulk fertilizer. It eats at everything on the tractor and the constant changes in direction don't help. Ours is the utility version with MFWD and 265 SLL. It is very good with the loader and has pushed more trees than it should have but makes a good poor man's dozer. It spent a few summers on a 12 row cultivator and 30 ft rotary hoe with no issues. It ran the rotary hoe in 8th gear and as fast as you could go and still hang on. Just a good tractor. If it had a power reverser and wet clutch, it would be the perfect loader tractor. Like b & d said its newer with easier starting and lighter I'm sure. I don't get why the hydraulic issues he's talking about. Ours has been used as much as one possibly could have been and besides the aforementioned issues with the fertilizer and tree limbs pulling at hoses and lines, it has been perfect in that department. Some people don't know anything other than what pops into their little heads when a model they don't like appears in one of these threads. Many times on this forum, people have run down various models as the worst Deere ever made with the entire line having specific issues. Sometimes this is true while other times, I know from experience that the issues were probably due to little or no maintenance and poor operators. I firmly believe that Deere makes the best stuff top to bottom. Other brands may have some minor things on Deere but can't compete with their complete package. I don't understand some people and their posts sometimes.

tractor is 2 wd. has 9600 hours. looks like it sat outside its whole life. it was a mower tractor for the county. started right up and sounded good. had to double clutch reverse. the interior was trashed. the ac did not work.

Is the trany very good? expensive to work on? why do you think one has to double clutch reverse? poor clutch or bad trany gear? The cab looks smaller than a 4430 cab. One would probably have to but interior for a 2955 only?
With it being built in Germany, do you think parts would be hard to get? Like AC parts? would JD dealer stock them? or are they special order?
asking price for the tractor with out loader is 8k.
loader came off a backhoe. custom fit job.
thanks

Worries about JD parts from France, Mannheim, Spain, China,Mexico are a non issue. Some persistent and wild stories abound about how parts can't be purchased for a 1840 etc in the US. Pure and utter old wives tales and hog wash.
Shifting problems are likely due to age, wear and dried lube in the shifters and I think cables in those models. Not a major worry.
Just don't ride the clutch, add non wet clutch oil to the transmission or let the coolant corrosion inhibitor get depleted.

I would prefer a 4020. The transmission and rear end are much heavier, but I do feel the 2955 engine is a little more responsive. (Just an opinion)

Most of the trouble in JD utility tractors is in the low pressure (transmission) hyd system. Lots of internal lines and places to leak. They can be fixed, I've worked on several. Unfortunately many JD mechanics dont seem to know (or maybe just dont want to know) how to fix them.

Good tractors, but they are utility tractors, meant for lighter work like loaders and for haying.
