2n brush hog attachment

West Michigan has a bumper crop of mosquitoes this year and it's so bad at the house that we can't walk down the 1/4 mile driveway to get the mail without getting eaten up.

I am looking to get a brushhog to clear out the underbrush and saplings in the woods on my 10 acres to try and dry things out a bit and hopefully get some of these buggers out.

I have a line on a good condition King Kutter attachment model L-72-40 which is a 6-foot unit with a 40hp gearbox. This is in the $500.00 range and appears to be what I am looking for.

Never used one of these but I already have the ORC so I think I'm set to go.

Any opinions on this? My 2N also has a 8N engine on it so I have a couple extra ponies to work with.

Thanks

Bob

You'll get varying opinions on this. I think the general consensus is that a six footer can be too much for an N Tractor. I guess it depends on what you're cutting. If you had a nice smooth level meadow it would probably do fine on a good running N. If the land is hilly and you're cutting thick weeds and saplings, you might not have all the "umphh!" you desire.
Most folks prefer five toot implements because that is the same width as the tire tread. If the tire can get up next to a tree or fence, the cutter will too. A six footer will stick out six inches on either side and if you're not paying close attention can snag on things that your tires have cleared.
I think a four footer is just a flat-out waste of time.

Just my two cents. You should be able to find a really good five footer for that price range. I think you'd be happier with it.

I'd go for a 5' hog on an N.. especially a 9n/2n that is already don on hp due to lowered comp ratio.

I have a King Kutter 6'. Was using it behind the IH M. Started cleaning out brush in the woods and decided to try it on the 8N because of it's ability to get into smaller places. Wehn cutting the heavy stuff the N just didn't have the power. I'm keeping the 6' for the M and bigger jobs but looking for a 5' for the N.

To "clear out the underbrush and saplings in the woods" I to think you'd be under powered for that task. I think you'd be happier and get better results that you are wanting with a 5 footer...

I've got an old 5' Massey Ferguson that I use for the same thing you are wanting and it has worked well for me.

6 footer is to big unless all your going to do is cut grass with it and that grass has to be cut about once a month or more or it will be to much. A 5 footer is just the right size for a N series tractor

I just found a King Kutter Rotary Mower manual and it had these instructions as to size of material to cut:
"This mower was designed to CUT PASTURE GRASS AND ROUGH AREAS UP TO 1" IN DIAMETER.. Use of your rotary mower to cut any material larger than 1" in diameter may damage the mower and void your warranty."
I hope that helps you out some. Your "saplings" may be bigger than the 1" that the King Kutter is designed for. I'm trying to get mine going but I've only got pasture. Gene

Good advice as always!

Many thanks for the guidance. I will search for a 5 footer.

Have a great day!

Bob
