2N - Live PTO?

I know that a 2N does not have live PTO from the factory - but is there a "common" way modify a "N" series to have live PTO? I know on the Farmall Hs & Ms you could install a M&W clutch to get a live PTO set up.

The reason I ask is there is a 2N advertised for sale and the own staes i nthe add it has live PTO.

I haven't been into N tractors a long time but I've not yet heard of any such thing. If there were, I would expect that many, if not MOST of us would have this conversion.
I know there is a guy on EBay that claims his ORC gives you live PTO.. NOT! Call him and ask him to explain how he accomplished this.

An overriding clutch on the PTO is the next best thing to Live power, but not the same, I am told even with Live power an Overriding clutch saves wear and tear from brush cutters and such. My brothers tractor with a live power clutch tried to stop the PTO instantly when the live power was disconnected, not a good idea, so he added an overrun clutch also.

I believe there is a way to convert 2Ns, 9Ns, and 8Ns into live PTO with Zane's Live Thang kit.

Do an archives search and I believe you will find some pictures of the kit installed on an 8N posted just the other day on this forum.

Zane's Thang will give you "live hydraulics" it will make the lift work without the PTO running.

Is there a 'common' way.... NO

Is there a way.. Yes.

There have been a few posts about rare live pto conversions.. both homade, and comercial.. using live pto adaption parts. ( There is a rare dearborn live pto.. and there are pics in the archive of some old machine shop custom built add-in for live pto ).

There have been posts about installing an axle clutch to give pseudo live pto.. etc.

If the seller says it has live pto.. look at it and see for yourself.

Live pto means you can disconnect the driveline and still maintain pto. To do this.. there has to be a clutch setup AFT of the tranny and foot clutch.. etc..

Most unknowing sellers that advertise live pto on an N.. have a 50$ ORC installed and don't know any better.. or are shceisters..

An ORC is a must on a bush hog. Keeps you from running into stuff. It is almost as good as LPTO.
As far as LPTO on these tractors it probably is not worth the time and effort.

I have a feeling that is the case here.

I'd email the seller with a CC to the auction house asking for a clarification on the description.

IE.. ask by what method it was a live pto> A dearborn addin, some other ancient machin sho add in, previous owner axle modification? or just plain mis represented and with a 50$ ORC on the pto shaft.

If the latter.. I'd ask for a clarification to be placed on the incorrectly described machine before bidding continues...

Too many frauds get perpetrated on un-knowing and unsuspecting people too often to let stuf flike this go on unchecked.

I frequently email ebay sellers pointing out glaring technical inacuracies in their descriptions of ford equipment.. i especialyl like the ones that list a 1965 ford 9N jubilee hundred series.. or some othere such nonesense..

This place is natorious for their Oklahoma Warranties - if it breaks in two while loading you got two and we'll only charge you for one.

Sounds like it is a 'scheister' oriented site...

I'd steer clear of that.. When the seller and the auctioneer are 'rip-off' artists.. there's no way to win except to not play.

Yes, better than a Lpto for safety

"It is almost as good as LPTO." Not in other circumstances eg: using a rotovator.

I wrote to the Purple Wave Auction site (above link) and told them that it was highly unlikely that they have a 2N with Live PTO and in the interest of their own credibility they should alter the listing. They quickly responded:

[b:6728a99828]Ken:

Thanks for letting us know. We list the information provided to us by
the consigners, and the guys who listed that item have no reason to
doubt what I'm sure was an oversight by the consigner. We're notifying
the consigner now and the listing should be changed very soon if it
isn't already.

Again, thanks for the heads-up.[/b:6728a99828]

Here is a live PTO convertion on Ebay. It came out of a ferguson but I wouldn't be suprised if it fit in the N series. It looks like it replaces the driveshaft coupler above the pump. You push/pull that long lever and the tractor stops but the PTO keeps going.

I just chk'd the site you refered to, for the 2N, with live PTO, And the ad. has already been changed. No mention of any live PTO anymore!!!
Must have really scrambled to do it that quick!!

The one shown in the Sean(TX)post was for the 1953 and later tractors as it was hydraulically operated from a small pump attached between the tachometer cable and hydraulic pump. I believe they were made by Sherman. Sherman also made one for the 9N/2N/8N tractors that was manually operated with a lever. I believe this is the one in the Ebay auction. It likely fit a TO-20 too as they were made very much the same as the Ford in that area. It was basically a clutch pack between the transmission and differential that uncoupled the link when operated, stopping motion without pressing the clutch but still keeping the PTO running. They are around but not very common.

Also saw an auction ad last year that said a 2N had Live PTO. Went to look at it and it was like any other 2N other than having an overdrive. Did have an Over-Running Coupler. Some people incorrectly call that live PTO.

Not much rain last night or yesterday. I even did some mowing yesterday afternoon. Im on high ground. Chances of me getting flooded are little to none. Im 1 mile from the guadalupe and 100 foot above it. Take more then a 100 flood to get me :) (If it does get me you can say good bye to New Braunfels)...BTDT twice already. Whats up with multiple hundred year floods in the last 10 years? Bone dry last year!!! This year is different for some reason.

Overall, the 2N in the auction above looks to be in nice shape. Bid only up to $575 but does not close for almost two weeks.

Is that a DIY project on the running boards? Looks like someone made a hanger for the foot pegs. 2Ns didn't come with running boards did they?

That tractor will bring at least twice that much if not three times, especially with a fresh overhaul on the engine and a decent paint job (if not original colors). It's getting tough to find any Ford N that runs for under $1000.
