2N will not run without choke

Hi again all, My 1944 2N will still not run without the choke 1/2 to 3/4 out with that the engine runs very well. Here is what I have done to the engine so far; this problem existed before any of these components where changed out.

1. new distributor and coil, coil voltage running is about 6.5 and I tried bypassing the resistor and switch
2. New plug wires and spark plugs
3. new carburetor
4. new intake/exhaust manifold and gaskets
5. New gas cap and tried running it without the cap on anyway.
6. new strainer/shutoff valve and fuel line.
Any ideas this engine is driving me crazy!

Hmmmmm........I think this is a stealth rebuild, one part at a time!

There are two schools of thought when it comes to fixing a poorly running tractor. One way is to just start replacing every part you can get to until it starts or you run out of money. The other way is to take a step-by-step approach to solving the problem, working from most likely to least likely. The trick to fixing these tractors (or trouble shooting any piece of equipment) is to be systematic about it. You need to isolate the problem step by step and work from most likely to least likely.

Pulling out the choke gives you a richer mixture. So, you could have either a fuel or spark problem.

A carb out of adjustment will also cause this problem; set the main jet at 1-1/2 turns out & leave it alone.

Dirty/old gas, or water in the gas can cause this problem.

Restricted fuel flow can cause this problem; remove the bolt at the bottom of the carb & check for flow.

And, finally, a vacuum leak can do the same thing. Get a hand propane torch and carefully spray it (unlit of course) around the intake manifold of the tractor while it is running. Or, you can use carb cleaner or WD40. If it speeds up, you found the leak.

Bottom line: Probably 75% of "needs choke to run" problems are fuel related, but do not rule out ignition problems. Just check the likely fuel problems first.

kdg.......needing a choke to run is almost always a carb problem. You claim you replaced yer carb. How did you adjust it??? They do NOT work right outta the box. Every engine/carb is slightly different. ......dell

While the manifold was off did you carefully look for leakage between the intakse and exhaust sides? Sounds like you may have a bad manifold. another way to check off the engine is to close off the intake ports, fill the intake side with water up to the carb flange and look fow water running out the exhaust.

The fuel flows fine from the bowl drain. The fuel is new and I will check for a warped manifold soon....

Either your carb is starving for fuel or it's clogged up.I'm betting it's clogged up(not were you can see it)

The carb is new however I have taken it apart, cleaned it, and set the float level, the same problem existed with a borrowed good carburetor.

Take the gas cap off and see if it will stay running without choke. If it does the vent in the gas cap is plugged.

Ok I have the same problem! Im going to rebuild the Carb when I get time next and then manifold gasket. Let me know if you get yours fixed and what it was. My question is for now will it cauue any damage to run the tractor with the choke pulled out for a hour or so at a time? New to an 8n tractor, Keith, Midlothian Va.

You might want to troubleshoot your problem before spending time/money on a carb rebuild. Needing choke to run has a number of causes & a dirty carb or a vacuum leak are but two causes.

Running it w/ partial choke for an hour or so won't hurt it. But, I would get it fixed soon.

Around the Richmond VA area, $75 gets you a shop rebuilt carb from Automotive Manufactures by VUU. The kit & solvent is going to cost you $50 or more. And, if it needs throttle bushings, most kits don't have them.

needing choke to runs either indicates a vacume leak or lean mix or weak sparks.

if sparks are good, check for a vacume leak. if that passes.. see what enriching the mix does.
