2nd pulling tractor

Im thinking about building a 2nd pulling tractor, my first is a Oliver 660 for stock pulling, my next i can't decide on a Oliver 77 or a Farmall M. I like the Olivers but have always wanted a M, it will be more modified tractor this time, without a big arguement starting what makes a better puller 77 or M or are they almost equal? Just looking for pros and cons? thanks in advance.

When you say more modified, how much are we talking, and would you be pulling it in a "modified" class or a "stock" or "improved stock" class.

Both would be good pullers.

In a "stock" class I give the edge to the farmall. There are tones of parts, and many builders who can make big power out of a M

For "modified" I give the edge to the olliver. There are quite a few drop in motor options. Starting from a 770, working up through the 88 series, all the way to the 310 out of a 1855 oliver/cockshutt.

On a budget I say it is a toss up. You can overbore both engines and get a few extra ponies. The 77 will be a class lighter than the M.

Both are a good option. Which colour do you like??

If you want to compare apple to apples you should be looking at an Oliver 88. The 77 is the equivalent to the Farmall H. In the end, all four models make exceellent modified pullers.

Well as you could imagine from looking at my screen name, I'm partial to the olivers. As it has been said, the 88 is a better comparison to the "M", but if you are looking at the hp per dollar and pound I would say the 77. There are alot of options that will put you way ahead of the other tractors in a comparable weight class with the 77. But if you are looking for bolt in kits available from different vendors then your probably better with the "M". All that said, i still think you would be better with either one of the Olivers. I hope this helps you make a decision.

Hi Paul,

I believe it is important to understand what class you wish to pull in. You say modified; but, how modified???? and where do you want to pull???? A limited Ontario prepective - If you have been pulling vintage and you come in with something a little "to hot", you pull once and asked never to come back again. Then after that you are stuck of where to pull (me and some of my pulling friends have been there and have no where to pull those tractors). If you you want to pull with some top tractors built to the NTPA division 4 rules (so you could pull in the US if you wanted) and pulling 30% over RPM you need to be running a tractor with a running displacement close to 1.7M cubic-inch/min (assuming a no speed limit pull). You cannot do this with a Oliver or IH, you will need to be using a CASE or Moline.

It is really important to understand where you can pull what you build. I wish we had the selection of classes that are in the US and tracks of the same calibur. Just hate for you to go through the same fate I have had with now two pulling tractors and it now looks like no where to pull them in Ontario as they were intended to pull (they are now changing the rules to knock out my tractor from pulling in the next couple of days).
