3:00 AM heifer check

It's heifer calving time again at our place! We had our 3rd calf when I got out and did the 3 AM heifer check. That makes 3 in three nights. Everything is fine with them. They were all born in the barn so were nice and warm. It has been in the single digits for lows the last few nights. Nice small calves, just right for heifers. We did sycronized(sp?) breeding for 5 days so it should only take about 2 weeks to finish calving. I hate getting up in the middle of the night and going out in the cold, then trying to get back to sleep! Glad it's only a couple weeks.

Glad they're coming along. Amazing how easily you can loose roughly 2 years work (9+ months gestation and 201 days to weining and the sale barn, + 2 months recovery before settling for the next one).

I sweat it out every year.

This last year a cow calved on the muddy bank of my pond and the calf slid down and into the water. Luckily I came along a few minutes later and was able to rescue it. Guarantee you that trying to carry a calf up a wet bank full of placenta wasn't easy.

make sure you get that navel dipped. btdt had a calf get navel infection now have a calf with bun leg and don't know what to do with her. i won't get anything at sale barn and mrs 730 says she won't eat her.

Just finished up in December and starting again in March so I know what you are going through. I bought an extra set of heavy duty polar coverwrals just so I can slip into them in the middle of the night when I crawl out of bed and be toasty as I was under my covers next to my wood stove.

Not quite. The catfish you could catch again if you lost them and they came from the water. The calf was a totally different feeling.....but I hear you.
