3 phase converter

Hello all,
Need to convert 3 phase to a single phase. I know many of you can do it with an electric motor. Anyhow, i am not that smart. I was going to purchase a converter and just needed help on what to look for. I want to run a walk in cooler, but it is a 3 phase. What info from the existing unit do i need in order to purchase the correct converter. And if you can provide info for the difference between rotary and static, that would be helpful too. Thanks so much for your time.

google "home made phase converters". I made mine out of stuff I had around, just had to buy a switchbox.

Dad had one made up to run a large lathe. Had made up by a local electrical shop. It took up no room, hung on wall and was the size of a small 200amp fuse panel.

It is just a small metal box works fine for the milling machine. This just sees limited use. For a cooler motor make sure to check with maker maybe a rotary one will be better for constant use. Not hard to use an old 3 phase motor either.
Got to be someone local that can help you. I did that with mine at first but got tired of having to start it all the time. Yours will likely have to run all the time.

You are correct, you can convert to 3-phase with a 3-phase motor, but for your application, a walk-in cooler, that needs power all the time is not suited to a rotary phase converter (motor). You need a solid state phase converter. These are more expensive and I don"t know of any DIY sites on these. You need to determine how much power you will need by learning how many HP the compressor motor is on your cooler. Then do a google search for a suitable solid state converter. I have seen some for sale on craigslist. Also, try an industrial supply reseller like HGR surplus: www.hgrindustrialsurplus.com

I use transformers. I only have a 3 phase 440 entrance for my factory. I have six transformers that drops down to 220/110 in different areas for lighting and outlet receptacles. I also have a 3 phase transformer that drops down to 220 3 phase to run my surface grinders. Each of my 440 machines have a transformer that steps down to 110 to operate the controls. Most electrical supply houses have them in stock.

Yep, that is what he asked for, but.........the rest of his post says the opposite.

Solid state VFD units are now cheap and reliable.VFD also provide true three phase power. A rotary converter or static will make an electric motor overheat if loaded to rated capacity.
VFD's save a wad of cash on the power bills over the years too.
