3 point backhoe or not

I have a 4wheel drive John deere 750. Im looking at getting a 3 point pto backhoe. Woods brand? Does anyone have this tractor and backhoe and what do they think. Ive seen alot of them with backhoes and think it would be helpful. Thanks for any advice.

Not as good as a permantly mounted unit. If you're doing light duty work, you'll probably be OK. FIL had one on a MF 175. Worked OK, however even at idle the PTO powered hydraulics worked awfully fast. Woods is a good name.

Certainly better than a pick & shovel.
The more rigid the mount the better.
Deere makes matching mounts and hoes for those tractors. Not cheap but everything fits and works together well.
I have a 10A on my 1640. It's just enough hoe to dig hard blue clay with a 12" bucket.

I had a Woods model 6500 and that would be a good choice for the 750. The Woods have good digging power. A subframe mount would be better but the 3pt. should be fine as long as it isn't in full time use.

I have that exact combination, have had for at least 15 years (don't recall exactly when I got the hoe, but the tractor is an 88)

It has done everything I've ever asked of it, and some things I shouldn't have asked.

Two pointers for you:

1: Have the top link attaching point that bolts to the rear end bored out and bushed with hardened bushings. The hoe puts a LOT of strain on that connection and the stock bracket will wear the holes out in no tome.

2. With the straight three-point system (no subframe) the hoe also puts a lot of strain on the transmission-to-rearend bolts. There are just four bolts there holding them together and they WILL stretch and cause the gasket between the trans and the diff to leak. After 10 or so years of hard use bordering on abuse, I had to split the tractor and replace that gasket and the bolts.

Use it with a little common sense, realize that it's NOT an excavator and you have to take small bites, and it will amaze you with the work it will do.

Once you get the hang of it, it's a 5 minute job to put it on or take it off. When I was making my living with the tractor, it was not uncommon for me to switch equipment 4 or 5 times a day.

Try it, you'll like it.

What brand hoe is that? Its hard to see in the picture. What size buckets do you have and use? Thanks for all the great info those are somethings that i wouldnt have thought about. Jim

if you can get a sub frame set up it is well worth it, and makes it a much more useful tool. I'm not a fan of the 3 point setup, but then again I can abuse a backhoe.

I have a frame mount Bradco which mounts at three points on the frame with simple drop pins. I have never used a three point mount, but I would think the frame mount would be better.

I have had a John Deere 165 3 point hoe for several years. After I had it for a couple of year, made a frame and mounted it solid. It was three times as effective. You have the weight of the tractor on the hoe which drastically increases the digging force. If you get stuck, high center or whatever, the hoe is a liability on a 3 point. It is almost impossible to stick it with a rigid mount. You can pull the tractor out with the hoe. You can also move the tractor sideways with a rigid hoe mounted hoe.
