30 rows and two cylinders

does anyone pull a 6 row 30" corn planter with their two cylinder tractor? i am wondering if the wheels can be adjusted to run between the rows on a 630 or 720

When I worked for a JD dealer we had a customer that pulled a 6 row 7000 with liquid fertilizer behind a 730 diesel. I never saw it in the field but it had to be really scratching on some of the hills. He used it for quite a few years though.

I have not tried it but an previous owner of a 630 said it should work but said to only fill the fertilizer boxes half full to keep the weight down.

Ben, it's not a problem. The minimum wheel tread on these tractors (row-crop) is 56" on the 630 and I believe it is 60" on the 720. Either will work just fine. Your operator's manual explains how to do this. It will require moving both the wheels and the rims to the minimum (or very near) seting. You want a 60" tread to run 30" rows. Mike

I gotta get into gear & figure out how to attach a picture. I have one of our 694 behind the 70D. A fun to plant with rig. Without fertilizer we've been known to pull it with the '51 gas B but he grumps & snorts a bit over that! Have also pulled it a LOT with the Longhood A which is almost as nice as the 70!

Never found wheel adjustments a problem with any of the three.

I'm sure they can. I pull a 6x30 planter with dry fert. with my 2520. Many were skeptical. It does work it in my one field with a steep knob in it. 5th gear, 5MPH.
I imagine the tractors you're referencing have the same wheels as mine. I have 15.5x38 tires on the tractor, and duals spaced out for 30" rows.

i'm planting with a 4440 and a 1780 12 row 30" planter. we have a few tite spots and i would like to find me a little six row 30" planter to to plant those patches and such. my idea was to try and talk my father in law into selling me his 630 with duel hydrolics to plant with but if my old 70 would do the trick better yet. the real trick would be sneaking the 9560 in the tite spots to get it. maybe i need a 105 combine too! you guys think i need an adjustable wide front or should my roll-a-magic do the trick? thanks

Pulling it is one thing and lifting it with full hoppers and a low presure hydralic system is another.

No problem. Our main planter tractor back in the 1970's and 1980's was a John Deere 730 diesel with NF. Planters were 494A on 30" row spacing at first and then later 694A again on 30" spacing.

Some people like NF for planting as it is easy to follow the planter marker with. Also NF turn very sharp.

Lastly nothing says your rear tires have to be exactly centered in the rows. You can get by with a little wider spacing than you think on those rear tires.

Crank the wheels in so they rub on the pulley and flywheel cover.
Don't lean against the tractor or it may tip over.

If it is a Gas 70..don't expect it to pull what the 630 will..
Those low RPM of a 70 Gas leaves no room to pull it down and get through tough spots..(unless you set the RPM up)..
Not sure how a 70D stacks up with a 720D..but they both a Horses..!!

I planted many, many acres with a 6-30" planter and either a '51 A or a 630 depending on the year. Most of the time it was the A. No power problems in 4th gear wide open but 5th throttled back was a little too fast and it made the temp gauge run too high. I liked the A better because of the way the vertically placed steering wheel fit my hands and posture. The muffler/air stack in the middle of the hood weren't exactly in the way but were more of an irritation when watching the mark. Jim

This is my 720 pulling a 8 row 7000. It has 18.4-38's, it dosen't get narrow enough to be exactly in the center of 30" rows but it works. Smaller tires would not be a problem. We don't use starter fert.
