3000 skipping or timing off

Hi all your input has been helpful and I'm back at it. I towed it and it started wow. It has a CAV pump and everything I ve read says set it on zero and that should be it but it runs a bit rough with what I think is too much white smoke. I can t determine if it s skipping or not how can you tell with no spark plug wires to pull off? Should timing be moved a bit if so can the pump be rolled while running to change timing?

Do not loosen pump when running!!!!!! There is a pump problem or low compression causing white smoke.
