3010 PTO questions

I just bought my 3010 tractor a few months ago and this is the only tractor of that era that my family has. On the rear of the tractor it currently has the 540 pto shaft in place. It has a 1000 shaft in the font of the transmission case under the operators platform. I read in the operators manual that you need to install the 1000 stub shaft into the rear of the machine to get the front shaft to spin. I currently don't have the 1000 stub shaft but am just curious about the uses of the front pto and if I could make a cover or something for the front shaft and use that as the 1000 stub.

Also is that front PTO standard on all machines or was that an added option.

The front PTO is / was a standard option on the 3010 tractor. The front shaft is permanent as it is the same shaft / flange that the rear PTO
stub bolts to. The drive train that drives the shaft is in transmission near front PTO shaft where gear selection / shifting takes place VIA from
internal shift control rod that controls / selects the PTO gear / speed. Control rod position is determined by rear PTO stub. One has a hole that
does not actuate the shift rod the other stub is solid pushing on rod in when it bolts up shifting internal gear set at front of shaft. This was
the single poorest part of a 3010 / 4010 tractor as there is an internal pin that looks like a 16 penny nail that can fail requiring a
transmission split to fix. So always make sure shift rod can be pushed in / shifted by hand before bolting up 540 stub so misalignment of shift
collar teeth does not cause internal pin to shear. DW

Standard on all 3010 and 4010 row crop tractors among other JD tractors. The front PTO will turn with the 540 stub installed but at 540 RPM. If you are going to use a
JD 10 or 50 mid-mount mower that will use the front PTO. Years ago we even ran a Delevan spray pump off of the front PTO. My advice to you is to use a light gauge
metal strip 1/16 thick in two pieces or so and drill two holes in each strip that will line up with two bolts for the back stub. Bolt the strips to the hub and once tight bend the corner over the bolt head
so it will not back out. Implement PTO shafts should slide easily and by hand before attaching to the tractor. Grease any and all fittings on the shaft. If you have to use
a blacksmith hammer to get the shaft to move then the shaft will most likely break the PTO hub out of the socket. I've run a 4010 for decades so I know these things to
be true. We have run wire balers, 2 row choppers, and flail type manure spreaders and those implements never broke the hub bolts as long as the described preventative
maintenance was done.

I heard that one of the things deere changed when they came out with the 3020 was the PTO shaft.

As long as I make sure the shaft mounting bolts are tight, and the expansion joint on the implements shaft is easily moveable and properly lubricated it shouldnt brake the mounting of the shaft.

Do you know where to get a stub shaft or if they are still available, I dont have any implements that need 1000 rpm but who knows what the future will bring

Just a reminder, I replaced the shift pin inside on my 4010 without splitting the tractor. Can be done thru
a hole drilled into the side of the transmission housing. My tractor happens to have that hole as it must
have been fixed once before. I posted photos on here several years ago.

Ebay has them listed for around 100 dollars. You could call Nelson Parts at 800-730-4020 to see if they have a used stub and for how much. They are located in Penn
Yan, NY and are open M-F plus some Saturdays.
