3010 vs 3020

Considering buying a 3010D or 3020D. I"ve heard old timers say the 3010"s and 4010"s had a lot more problems than the 3020"s and 4020"s... is there any truth to this?

What are some common problems to look for on a 3010D?

Thanks!

The biggest problem per se with the 3010 is the bolt-on PTO hub if somebody has not gone to locking tabs for extensive PTO work. The 3010 was rated at approximately 55 PTO hp which put it at an awkward size for some. 60 to 62 PTO hp with appropriate displacement change would have made it seem more lively with a 3 bottom plow or forage harvester are the comments I have heard over the years.
The 3020 added displacement (276 c.i. for the diesel) and went to a slide-in PTO with locking ring. When introduced the option for Synchro-Range or Power Shift transmission existed where the 3010 was just the Synchro. As of 1965 I believe the option of differential lock was offered. Then in 1969 the side console for hydraulics was added along with the option of a third remote.
Excluding early block numbers on the 3010 an owner could install over-sized sleeves and pistons into the diesel. If this has been done along with the PTO stub locking being addressed I would not shy away from a 3010 but depending on the year the 3020 will have things on it simply not available with a 3010.

The PTO system is the primary problem and difference between the 10's and the 20's and that's enough to make a "huge" difference..You can not up-grade them ether, the way the PTO stub shaft bolts onto the tractor and the shift collars to take it from 540 to 1,00 RPM is where the problem is centered at, there are a few smaller things that aren't as important..I would go with a 20'seres if given the choice.

Agreed that the 20 series PTO was superior and would be good for extensive heavy PTO work. I have seen properly cared for 10 series do lots of forage harvester and baler work though.

Thanks, both of you, for you're input. Very helpful.

I'm trying to 'move on' from the ol 2 cylinders and thought I ought to try out a new gen...

It's been well explained here, but I'll add this. I learned from this forum that there were PTO problems for the 3010 and 4010. When I was shopping for my 4020, I saw a lot of advertisements for 4010's that admitted that they needed PTO work or that the PTO didn't work.

The 3020 is the way to go. Try to find one with side console (after 1969) if you can. The diesel model would also be a plus. I have had some and they are a great tractor in that time frame. The 4020 is the best if you can move up a little. Good luck.

Do you know a man named Larry that retired from being an engineer at Ottumwa factory? He's now associated with a company that markets Netwrap. I talked to him yesterday about an occasional problem of the Netwrap wrapping on the spirals on tailgate roller on my 467 baler.
Thanks,Jim

I have been told there is a PTO engagement pin of some sort that has been known to break (in 3010’s and 4010’s). Should this occur, it requires splitting the tractor to fix it. Of course this does not exist on 20 series. I have a 3010D ’62 (converted to 12V) and have been satisfied with it, although it’s use is not too extensive and primarily does all aspects of haying and moving round bales around., maybe close to 100 hours a year. I have always been amazed at the torque and lugging capacity of this 55 hp or so tractor that is closing in on 50 years. IMHO, the 3010s/3020s, and 4010s/4020s were simply over-engineered and have survived the test of time. It will be interesting to see if tractors made in the 80s and 90s will be in regular use and chugging around in 2030 and 2040. I doubt it. In closing, even though I am satisfied 3010 owner, I would trade it for a 3020 any day.
