3020 diesel wont start

My 3020 diesel wouldnt start today and barely turned over. Do you think it is the batterys and it is 24 volt. The starter and soleonoid are new. It turned over real slow and the rain cap didnt move and no smoke out of it. I even gave it some ether. Need it tomorrow. Any Ideas!! Thanks Alot!!!

no ether! it's a good way to make your engine spin backwards. That's expensive.
how cold is it where you are?
You sure both battery are hooked up correctly?

it is probably cold and hard to crank since it is cold does it have a block heater? if not get one worth there money when it is cold it could be bad batteries contributing have them load tested at a battery shop or the starter could just be close to dieing if it needs a starter spend a little more and switch it to 12 volt get a kit comes with starter alternator and step by step instructions how to do it very worth the money and 12 volt starters are cheaper and your lights will also work better

It is 15 degrees and I didnt spray much ether. They are hooked up right because it as been starting good till this cold spell. Im gonna pull start it and charge the batteries up maybe. Thanks!!

does it have a destroke vaalve on the main hydraulic pump. If you remove the radiator side screen on the left side there could be a "t" handled screw. Screw it in, then if you get it started back the screw out. That is in a way disconnecting the pump,making it turn over faster. If it does"nt have one I would makee sure that i went to a dealer and got one. They dont cost much.

Don't know if you have an oil bath or dry air cleaner. Either way that's one thing you could check. One of the better mechanics I have known was fooled by a tractor that wouldn't start when it got really cold- water in air cleaner froze and effectively shut off air flow.

It doesnt have that on the pump. I will purchase one and what do you have to do to install it. Do you just screw it in. Thanks!!

it's much colder than that here, and our 24-volt 3020 starts fine without ether. I'd definitely charge the batteries.

My 4010D starts easily at -20 when plugged in. it has a 1500 Watt "tank type" heater & no "destroke" valve on the hyd pump. By the way, it is still 24V & is vastly superior to any 12Volt system ever devised!! Spins like summertime when plugged in! I'd never consider changing it over to 12V.

The parts man at the dealer can show you where it goes on there computer. You remove a plug and screw the destroke asssembly in. I would also consider installing a block heater, if you have'nt yet.

Don't buy a de-stroking valve just rock the steer wheel back and forth a little that will de-stroke the pump enough to help it turn over easeyer, throw a tarp or blanket over it and put some heat under it for a bit it will change every thing..

What TimS said is absolutely correct, moving the wheel back and forth creates a high pressure leak that will make the engine crank over faster. You really should add a block heater though if you want reliable starts in weather like this. It won't be so hard on your tractor.

You are talking about a syncro right? When we milked cows we had 2 3020 diesel with power shift and found the best way to get them started was to plug in the block heater for an hour then pull the lever to disconnect the tranny till it started. Some how the 5020 always started with ether.

When it is cold, they will start better with 24 volts than with 12.

As previously asked. Are you trying to start the tractor in below freezing temps without a block heater???
Are the batteries fairly new, matched in size/capacity/age? Diesel cables or Walmart automotive cables?
Splurge the whole $10.00 and get a destroker. It works better than the farmer fix of rocking the steering wheel.
Had to rush and start the 1640 this morning at 0F with only 20 minutes of the 750W tank heater. Destroked the pump and let the two new 750amp batteries crank through the new HD battery cables. The chassis connection goes directly to a starter mounting bolt, not to some chassis sheet metal somewhere. Has 15W40 synthetic in the crankcase.Pushed the clutch down too.
To my surprise it fired on the 3rd turn and ran rough for 15 seconds. Then smoothed out and revved up.

It dont have a block heater just kept in a barn. It has two batteries that was new in March of 2008. Good cables new starter and solenoid. It still wont start.
