3020 problems

My favorite chore tractor,a 1966 3020 diesel started a light knocking thursday evening about half a mile back on my farm. I shut it off and walked back in. I have been covered up with work both at home and my part time job so this is the first chance I have had to post a question. It is in a remote field down a steep muddy hill. A truck and trailer are out of the question untill dry weather which probably means spring. I am leery about towing it out with another tractor because of the horror stories I have read on here about possible damage from towing a 3020.I hopefully will get to check it out monday afternoon. I hope it is an injector but afraid it wont be. There are many on here that know so much more than I ever will so what are your suggestions? Do you think it would be safe to tow it back to my shop to check it out. I even thought about driving it out but Iam afraid of damaging the block and know they are next to impossible to find. Thanks for any help or suggestions. Lee

Your tractor has a tow position on the shifter on the dash if it's a syncromesh, or down on the floorboard if it's a powershift.

I knew it had the tow position{its synsromesh} but I had been told not to use it because it would damage it anyway. I guess I may try it monday. Thanks for the help.

NO risk of damage in TOW, if you "find" the exact tow position carefully, and the transmission is properly full of oil.

my dad has a jd 500 back hoe that is a 3020 engine.
neighbour borrowed it to do some work. he called up and said it started
to develop a little knock in the engine. of course he was done his work
with it. dad got a ride over to diagnose the problem and decided the best
way to get it back home was to drive it. Half throttle he made it home and
into the shop. decided to drop the oil and take the pan off.
morrow of the story we found a loose con rod bolt.
thinking the crank was damaged we removed the cap and with close inspection
everything looked fine. bought 2 new bolts and back together.
that was 15 years ago and it still is doing a days work and running great.
something to check out on yours.

Thanks so much everyone. I will try to tow it out tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully the hill will have dried out enough it wont be too bad. I will probably be back on here when I start trying to diagnose. Thanks again Lee

When you tow it keep in mind the steering will be non-functioning as well as the brakes, so you might want to run the chain thru a pipe so it doesn't get away going down hill. . If you have a larger tractor with a quick coupler just pick up the front end and take it home .

Yes to what Don said and make sure it is held in the tow position,, it will not stay there on it's own..
