3020 Vibration

Have a 70' 3020 diesel, had it for a while and always noticed some vibration throughout the tractor extremities(controls, steering wheel, muffler, etc.). Didn't think much of it until I recently drove a different one and noticed very little vibration compared to mine. I am aware these 4 cylinders have a counter-rotating engine balancer, my concern is there maybe something wrong with mine. Talked to my local dealer serviceman and he said he has never seen one fail. Has anyone had any problems with the balancer on theirs? Can someone explain how it works and how much time and cost is involved to repair it? People tell me it is common for the 3020's to have some vibration but mine seems a little extreme.

About all the repairs on the balancer system is the bearings or gears, but it sounds like someone has had it apart and did not get the balancer timed correctly with the crankshaft marks. this is a very hard job for one person to do since it will be upside down and heavy. It usually requires pulling the engine and doing it with the engine upside down in a stand. there should be very little vibration in this model tractor if the balancer timing is correct.

I think if it were my tractor the oil pan would come off and I'd have a look. Used 3020 engine blocks are scarce as hens teeth

As TXjim has said, pull the pan and check the balancer for timing. Get a service manual for your tractor serial number break before doing this. If the balancer is not in time, ( as i suspect) timing it is relatively easy to do. The bolts that hold the balancer up are 1/2 x 4 1/2. With the use of 2 longer bolts (1/2 x 5) you can drop the balancer down just far enough to re-time. Easy enough for one person.

drop the pan and check timeing to crankshaft while in there check the timeing of the two shafts to each other if you need to change at the crank loosen the four bolts and retime now slowly tinghten the bolts a littel at a time and dont force it no need to pull the motor
