3055 Starting Issue?

Strange to me. Sometime starts right up, & other times doesnt. Can hear the selenoid click. Turn the key 5, 10, 15 times, & nothing. Whats strange is if it doesnt start, walk away & come back 20 minutes later, & it will start up with one key turn every time without fail. Try less than 20 minutes, & it never works.

I am going to remove the starter this weekend, & just have it rebuilt; but still would like to figure out what the problem is. Any Ideas? Never Experienced this before!

I have had something similar happen on three different (older) tractors, where the solenoid will click but no action on the starter. I have not walked away, though, and returned to have it start up. Apparently on mine, there has been a problem getting adequate voltage to the starter to engage it. I have put on a battery charger and left it for a while to "top off" the charge on the batteries. The tractor has started right up then. Could this be the problem?

get a test light or volt meter and see if the small wire(key switch trigger)on the starter solenoid has power when in the crank mode. If not, the neutral start switch would be a good spot to look. Also examine the terminals on the key switch. If you see discoloration or burning on key switch connectors or lose terminals or feel heat, that can be a problem. Good luck

Check to be sure this RE164448 STARTER RELAY is getting a good ground and 12V on the other relay posts. Looking at parts schematic(no 3055 TM available to me) I think the relay gets its ground through this RE51183 WIRING HARNESS.

In my cases as I remember, it was not necessarily an issue with the batteries being weak/bad, but there was a small voltage drop between the batteries and the starter solenoid, and with that voltage drop, it was inadequate to engage the starter. I believe our mechanic installed an extra "relay" on one of the three tractors, which was to help ensure the proper voltage was getting to the solenoid.

If I'm correct the extra solenoid you referred to is factory installed on the 3055.
Also sometimes it helps to remove safety(neutral) start switch and reinstall with 1 or 2 less shim washers.

Check all battery connections...While it is not cranking jump the starter at the battery..making sure it is in park or neutral...If it won't go..battery ends or batteries or bad solenoid...

I have had a similar problem on a 2940.It acts up when engine is warm. Some times will start ok Then you shut it off and it will not work. I have new cables no help. The problem is in the switch. I carry a screw driver to use when the start switch fails.

My 2550 does this also. I had the starter rebuilt and it still occasionally does it, but not as often. A bump with a screwdriver on the starter terminals and it fires right up. Very strange. Prob only does it 1 out of 20 or so starts. Checked neutral switch and it is working. I am now thinking it is the solenoid. Mine is a Bosch starter, I believe.
