Saw a 34 A on steel today at auction and it was the 114 th one built. Got a price of 18,250.00 but ownwer no-saled it. Said it was worth more. Is that because of the 1934 age or particular serial # or what?

Nothing particularly special about that serial number, it's just an early 1934 "A". Price sounds like plenty to me, especially for a tractor on steel, which many collectors do not care for, and I don't blame them. Perhaps the owner was a little mislead about what his tractor was worth.

The very early "A"s had many parts on them that were different from the later ones, and if that tractor had those parts on it that might account for the price. The "A" went through many more changes early in production than most other (maybe all other) JD tractors. Unless you are familiar with them it's hard to appreciate this fact. The price doesn't seem that out of line IF all the right parts are there and the condition is right.

I know that some collectors don't like steel wheels, but steel tends to be more popular with collectors of earlier tractors.

i was at the same auction. earlier in the A's life it went through a tornado, the steering pedistal was welded and the base of the steering rod support, i talked to a guy there that bought like the 50th or so one made and paid 30 grand wow.
