350B wont run

Hello, I recently bought a 350B with the diesel engine. It ran good for a couple hours. Now it may run for awhile and shut off. I have changed the filters, and recently cleaned the tank. This did not seem to make a difference. I then changed the primer pump. The dozer ran for quite awhile, but missed terribly. It then started to do the same thing as before. Now it has diesel in the crankcase and the primer pump wont work. Im going to put a new pump on it tommorow and change the oil. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Any suggestrions would be greatly appreciated. thank you

I'm not sure I fully understand all that you stated, since you already changed the primer pump once, and now might do it again?

It's a fairly simple system. First, fuel must be coming out of the bottom of the tank freely. The 350 has a fuel petc*ck (sorry, can't properly spell the word in this forum or it gets deleted).
It only has a tiny, maybe 1/8"or 3/16" hole and gets plugged easy. So, unhook the fuel line there - and check to see fuel is flowing.
The fuel transer-pump - that you are calling a primer pump - sends low pressure fuel on to the injection pump. The OEM version also has a hand-pump lever for filter priming. Make sure it works and is not plugged - and check it by cranking the engine - do not trust tests made only with the hand-primer lever.
Make sure fuel is actually getting to the injection pump. This ought to be the first thing you do. Just unhook the feed line to the back of the pump and crank the engine - and see if a good flow of fuel squirts out. Or - do the same at the filter housing by opening the bleeder screw.
If you've checked all else - and you are sure the injection pump is getting fuel - but it won't run right - then you've got pump problem. If it's a model DB or JDB pump - and not the little round C pump - it is prone to breaking the internal plastic weight-retainer ring. That plugs the pump and makes it run lousy - and often keep quitting. It that is the problem, you need to pull the pump apart and fix it. It is a very common problem with all Stanadyne/Roosamaster D, DB, JDB, DC, and DB2 pumps up to year 1985.

You need to figure out how the diesel is getting in the oil. Something has to be leaking. This could also be the reason for it not running properly. If it didn't get diesel in the crankcase before I'd start with the primer pump you replaced. Dave

Fuel in the crankcase can be from either the primer pump or the cup seals on the injection pump drive shaft. The engine ding condion sounds like the governor wear ring in the injection pump is coming apart and plugging the return fuel fitting at the injection pump. You need to have the injection pump rebuilt by a diesel injection repair facility.

Hi guys, thanks for the info. I changed the primer pump and changed the oil. It still won't run for long but the fuel isn't going in the oil. There seems to be air in the filters every time I check. I'm not sure if its just air from having everything apart or something else. Anyways I'll have to wait until the battery charges to try again. thanks
