36 RC engine

just got a 36 RC engine won't turn over. not froze, can turn backwards a little, when turning forward it locks up. wondering where to look first.figure it is a tear down deal.

I believe that machine has inspection covers on the oil pan you can remove and look for a broken rod.

It could have water or gas on top of piston. Pull the spark plugs and see if it turns over.

don't think it's water or gas. the stopping point is defiantly a hard bump. can almost hear it thump. hasn't been run in years. stored in barn and covered. old guy died and grandson had a sale. sure it's a mechanical lock up.

I believe that you have one or more valves stuck
The valves are in the block, not in the head. If one is stuck it will only turn over until the piston comes in contact with the stuck valve.

I'am just guessing it could be a valve stuck. I have an RC in storage and if I remember right there is a cover behind the carb. that you could remove and see what the valves are doing. I would take plugs out and shine a light down in cylinders and see what they look like.

Piston can"t hit the valve if its a flat head. There are no pushrods to bend, so it could still be a stuck valve. Pull the plugs and stick the blowgun down in there and see if its just carbon sitting on the piston hitting the head. (or seeds and nuts if the mice have been crawling around the open valve.BTDT)

I had an engine that did that. Turns out, someone had "worked" on it prior to me buying it and had disconnected the number three connecting rod from the crank and bolted everything back together, leaving the rod hang there. The crank would turn almost all the way around and then hit on the rod. As they say, Never underestimate the power of stupid people. BT

I had the same thing on a DC. Previous owner said it just needed a carb. and it would run.

"Nuts". Nuts in the cylinder on top of the piston could be another possibility if mice could get in trough the manifold area. I had this happen.

stuck valves

Had a SB Chevy do that once. Mice got in one cylinder and had been there for a while. With their waste etc. on top of the piston the cylinder was rusted about an inch down. Engine would go almost a full revolution forward and backwards but not all the way around. I now store my engines with every hole blocked. I now know not to underestimate the little creatures.
