400 cyclo planter

Hey just bought a cyclo 400 planter, and according to the chart, for the planting rate i want to use it says 7 mph! Do i really have to plant at such a high speed?

That would be the MAXIMUM speed.

Thats what i assumed, but it doesn't say max, it doesn't say min, it just says: Speed.

The 400 cyclo air planter will work best between 4 and 5 mph. I would NOT go over 5 mph with it. We always planted at around 4.5 mph and had a nice crop.

The drum is ground driven so you can go as slow as you want - I planted a plot of sweet corn in first gear one year, came up beautifully and grew nice. Darn raccoons got all of it the night before I was going to harvest it... :evil:

Those darned Cyclos are a heck of a planter, but they have a few idiosyncrasies.

Keep the tires aired up, never put 'em in the ground sitting still, if it has that two-bit monitor, throw it away to maintain yer sanity, always keep the drive chains tight and plant as close to that chart as ya can (they plant better at speed).

I always planted in Hi second with the thing wound up to 11 ounces of air on a 766D and 16.9 X 38 tires.

Does anyone out there have a dry fertilizer set up off an 8-row that they'd be willing to part with?

It says that for a reason.

Make sure the drop shoes are sharp and the deflector chains are in place; they wear the bottoms.

7 mph seems a liitle fast, I agree on the 4.5 to 5 mph. I used a 400 on 1000's of acres and found out if I crowded it, especially on rougher ground, the seed would fall out and the stand could be short. Good planter but I think the guy recommending 7 mph was in perfect conditions. Keep your RPM's up and you'll do great.

The others have given the corrrect advice. Maximum speed is 7 mph, and you would be much better served if you don't go above 5 mph. Better yet, 4 to 4.5 mph.

My brother-in-law did min/no-till with his 800 cyclo... I don't believe the 400 is really conducive to being set up for no-till, but anything is possible with the right modifications.

Does anybody know of any type of no-till setup available? Anybody have dry ferilizer for an 8 row? And does anybody know how to set the brushes? there's just a wire holding it down
