400 diesel/gas

Friend of mine has a gas 400 and has found a 400 diesel parts tractor. Are the clutch, and pressure plate the same on both tractors? He wants to put his good gas engine into the parts tractor if the transmission and rear are tighter than his. Thanks for any information.

i would bet they are , never ever heard different ..but have no experience to testify other than limited knowledge of case

The only real difference between the 400 diesel and the 400 gas is the heads on the engine. They both use the same block and everything.

the clutch and flywheel is different as is the fuel tank and a few other minor things. The cam, oil pump, pistons, sleeves, heads, timing cover, governor, ect are all different. The engines will swap but you have to keep the gas clutch and flywheel on the gas engine, the diesel is almost 3 times the size and weight. Rebuilt my diesel 400 last year and put a new clutch in it.

the clutch is the same. The actual flywheel is also the same, but the starter ring gear is different. the diesel ring gear with the diesel starter the gas ring gear with the gas starter. so technically you could bolt the diesel flywheel to the gas engine, but you would have to use the diesel starter.

I've changed quite a few of these engines around. right now we have a diesel case-o-matic running around with a gas flywheel and a gas starter although it has to be pretty warm for it to start.

the flywheel is the same?? theres an easy hundred pound difference from gas to diesel just ask BOB-WIS he dropped a diesel one on his foot a year or 2 ago

Sorry I am wrong the flywheels are different, but both will bolt to the crank. just keep all the gas stuff together and all the diesel together and you will be fine.
