Does anyone have information on putting a 400 engine in an M frame, will the engine bolt up, just wondering if anyone has ever done it.

People have certainly done it before. I think you might require the M flywheel but I imagine someone more knowledgeable will be able to sort you out. tractorsam

The block is a bolt in, The front cover, mounts will need to be from the M. Or modified to be operational. The m front needs to be from a late M or SM to have the proper hydro pump compatible mount holes. The flywheel and starter ring gear need to be from the M. There may be some issues with the radiator to thermostat housing connection, but not insurmountable. JimN

Yes you can bolt it in with all IH parts except the vent pipe from 400 valve cover to air cleaner. Rig up with PVC hose. Governor throttle arm needs switched with the M. Use M lower cast coolant pipe from coolant pump. Both flywheels can be used but unless you have a late M with the 12 inch clutch it won't clear your belley pump so you have to use the 11 inch M one. If thats not a isue, a 12 inch clutch plate from a late M or a SM can be used with the 400 pressure plate if in good shape. May want to remove the pto drive splines from 400 PP if using. Piliot bearings or starter gears no problem. If not using the 400 hydraulic pump you need the distributor drive housing from part of 1950 M on up and SM to bolt to 400 bolt pattern. Look for one with a 6 didgit part # instead of a 4 didgit on it. Top coolant pipe in the 400 may not have a bolt hole in same place as M for original generater brace. Depends on when it was made. Some later manifolds will rub the M throttle rod that passes behind it if not clearanced. Need your M oil line to pressure G. fitting to put in 400 block.

Thanks guys great information, one other thing, does the 400 block look like the M block, is it easy to tell that it is not the correct engine,,, Thanks

Unless you get close enough to read things on the block the only thing to notice when mounted in tractor is most 400 engines had a dip stick and M didn't originaly have one. I didn't remember this next thing at time of last post, if using a 400 carburetor the choke lever is on the engine side and a M is on outside.
